Formerly a builder and fireplace manufacturer, in 1937 he began farming in Worcestershire, [n the last war he did experimental work for the Ministries of Supply and Food.

Since 1941, he has been a member of Manchester City Council.

He joined the Labour Party in 1945, and later was vice-chairman of the Hampstead Labour Party.
