Oldfield, a former cotton operative who was Labour Party agent for 20 years before winning the seat in a by-election in 1942, was Parliamentary private secretary to the Minister of Education. For over 20 years he represented Openshaw on Manchester City Council and is an alderman. He is 67, and was for many years secretary of the Gorton Trades and Labour Council.

    Air Vice-Marshal D. C. T. Bennett is an Australian and was born in 1910. He was the creator and A.O.C. of Bomber Command’s Pathfinder Force. On leaving the R.A.F. in 1945 he became chief executive officer of British South American Airways, resigning in February, 1948, after differences on matters of policy. He is chairman of the executive committee of the United Nations Association in Great Britain. He represented Middlesbrough West from May to July, 1945.

He was a member of the Rushcliffe Committee on nurses’conditions and salaries, and is a member of the T.U.C. Advisory Committee. He is a trade union official.

    Sir George Harvie Watt, K.C., has been M.P. for Richmond since 1937, and represented Keighley 1931-35. During the war he was Parliamentary private secretary to Mr. Churchill. He was a member of Kensington Borourfr Council from 1934 to 1945, and was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey in 1942. He was educated at Edinburgh and Glasgow Universities, and was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple, 1930, practising in London and on the N.E. Circuit. He is actively interested in the Territorial Army and is a director in several companies. He was given a baronetcy in 1945.

From 1945 to 1947 he had Ministerial responsibility for the British side of the Control Commission in Germany and Austria, and from April to October, 1947, he was Minister of Pensions.
