Mr. Ernest Davies is a journalist and won Enfield from the Conservatives in 1945 with a majority of 11,690. Forty-five years of age, he is a son of Alderman A. Emil Davies, of the L.C.C. He was educated at Wycliffe College, Gloucester, and in 1922 went to the United States of America to obtain newspaper work. He returned to Britain in 1924. During the last Parliament he was Parliamentary private secretary to Mr. McNeil, th? Minister of State. He took a prominent part in debates on road and rail transport.

As chairman of the Halifax housing committee he opened last summer its one-thousandth post-war house. During the war he became chairman of the civil defence committee.

Mr. Geoffrey Bing, who was the first M.P. for Hornchurch, was for a time a Government whip, chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party Defence and Services Group, and chairman of the House of Commons branch of the British Legion. Born in 1909, he is a barrister and was one of the founders of the National Council of Civil Liberties in 1934. During the war he served in North Africa and Europe and was wounded.

Elected for South-West Hull in 1931, he has been Financial Secretary to the War Office, Under-Secretary at the Foreign Office, Minister of State, and Minister of Education. Defeated in 1945, he was elected at a by-election the same year for South Kensington.

Mr. Osbert Peake, who was born at Don-caster in 1897, served with the Coldstream Guards in the 1914-18 war. After being called to the Bar, he took up politics, was elected for North Leeds in 1929, and has represented it ever since. He has been Under-Secretary to the Home Office and Financial Secretary to the Treasury. Formerly a coalowner in South Yorkshire, he is an authority on industrial matters and helped to draft the Workmen’s Compensation Act. He is a descendant of Earl Grey, Prime Minister in 1832. He was made a member of the Privy Council in 1943.
