He entered a business career and became manager of a British firm in Turkey. He was commissioned in the Territorial Army in the last war and went on a military mission to Madagascar.

He is chairman of the Scottish Nationalist Party.

An extensive farmer and stock breeder in Perthshire, he has been a champion of the rights of Scottish agriculture.

    Maj. W. F. Vernon won the seat in 1945. Born in 1882, he became an electrical and aeronautical engineer, and an engineer-lieutenant in the R.N.V.R. in the 1914-18 war. Afterwards he was a squadron-commander in the R.N.A.S. and a major in the R.A.F. Later he was a technical officer at the Air Ministry and assisted Mr. Tom Wintringham in founding the Home Guard School at Osterley Park. He is an organizer and lecturer of the Workers’ Education Association, and is an executive member of the Association of Scientific Workers.

    Mr. A. H. Foord was born at Ewell, Surrey, in 1919, educated at Harrow, and served five years with a family firm of solicitors in the City of London. He was commissioned in Bomber Command and took part in night attacks on Berlin and the Ruhr and on the German battleships at Brest. He was twice mentioned in dispatches. A bachelor, Mr. Foord practises as a solicitor in Westminster.
