    BIOGRAPHY :

    Mr. G. C. Touche was born in 1895, and educated at Marlborough and University College, Oxford, of which he is a B.A. He is a barrister, author of two law books, and director of several city investment trusts. He has been M.P. for the old Reigate division since 1931, and in the last Parliament was on the panel of Standing Committee chairmen. Before 1931 he had unsuccessfully contested Ashton-under-Lyne and North Islington, of which his father, the late Sir George Touche, was M.P. from 1910 to 1918.

    Mr. V. G. Wilkinson was born in 1897 and is a Co-operative Insuiance Society agent. A member of Guildford Borough Council for 20 years, he is a former Mayor and since 1934 has been a member of Surrey County Council. Before entering the insurance business he was in the engineering trade, and at 25 was appointed district secretary of the Amalgamated Engineering Union. He has been a member of the Labour Party since 1918.

Previously he had undertaken extensive explorations in Central Africa and the Arctic. He is chairman of the Midland Union of Conservative Associations. Born in 1905, he was educated at Wellington and Sandhurst.

From 1923 to 1930 he was an official of the Transport and General Workers’ Union, and has been organizing secretary of the Workers’ Travel Association. He is a governor of Ruskin College and vice-chairman of the British Institute of Adult Education.

    Mr. L. J. Callaghan was elected for Cardiff South in 1945 and was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport in 1947. He was born in 1912. A member of the Inland Revenue Staff Federation since 1929, he was from 1936 until recently assistant secretary. At the outbreak of war he joined the Navy as an able seaman and was later promoted lieutenant, R.N.V.R. He has visited the West African colonies and Russia, and was chairman of the Defence and Services Committee of the Parliamentary Labour Party, 1945-47.
