    BIOGRAPHY :

    Mr. Harry Pollitt, leader of the Communist Party, was born in 18S0, and fought the seat in 1935 and 1945. He went to work at 12 in a Lancashire cotton mill, and was later a boilermaker. After leading many dock and shipyard movements for better conditions for the workers, he was sentenced to 12 months’imprisonment in 1925 for sedition, and, with Tom Mann, was arrested in Cardiff in 1934 but was released. During the Spanish Civil War he organized the British battalion of the International Brigade, and visited Spain several times.

    Mr. G. O. Roberts, who is 36, was the youngest Welsh member in the old Parliament. He was educated at the Universities of Wales and London and on the Continent. He is a Fellow of the University of Wales, and is lecturer in education at Swansea University’ College. Formerly he was youth education officer for Caernarvonshire. A governor of the University of Wales, he is also associated with the National Museum of Wales.

    Mr. H. E. G. Evans, born in 1911, contested the division as a Liberal in 1945, and stood this year as a National Liberal with the official support of the Conservative Party. A barrister, he was president of the Union at Cambridge, where he graduated with honours, and in the course of extensive travels he was arrested in Germany in 1936 for anti-Fascist views. He was a squadron leadet during the war, serving in North Africa and Italy.

Born in 1884, mingling his early school lessons with work on his father’s farm, he later went to Cambridge and took first-class honours in both parts of the Law Tripos, and also gained distinctions when studying for the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1909. He took silk in 1926, and has a leading place in commercial practice.

He has been chairman of the Scottish League of Young Liberals and the Kirkcaldy Liberal Association, but left politics in 1934 for 10 years. He is governing director of a Kirkcaldy firm of furniture manufacturers.

He specialized in the law governing electiicity supply, and joined Edmundson’s group of electrical power companies, becoming secretary and director of 15 concerns. He left the industry on nationalization and is now director of companies mainly in the chemical and allied industries.
