Mr. H. C. Usborne was M.P. for Acocks Green in the last Parliament. Aged 41, Mr. Usborne lived in the Punjab as a child, his father being in the Indian Civil Service. He gained an honours degree in engineering at Cambridge and in 1932 he started as an oil combustion engineer, founding a company of which he is now chairman. He is vice-president of the National Peace Council.

He has taken a great interest in the work of the local Y.M.C.A., and is also chairman of t?e Bolton Savings Committee. He is a Methodist local preacher.

Mr. T. Boyce, who was born in Worcestershire in 1882, was a schoolmaster in Liverpool and Blackburn. He worked for the Royal Navy in the war on research with smoke floats and depth charges. Later, ‘he was deputy director of education at Coventry and director at Middlesbrough, before his appointment to Bradford in a similar capacity in 1925. He is now retired.

Mr. F. A. Cobb won Elland for Labour in 1945. Born in 1901, he served in the Merchant Navy during the 1914-18 war. He is a radio engineer and general manager of a firm producing wireless equipment. An associate of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, he is also a member of the American Institute of Radio Engineers.

He subsequently became district organizer for the Communist Party and served for five years as a member of the party’s national executive committee.

Mr. N. Dodds, aged 47, received his education in a village school in Co. Durham. When elected in 1945 he was publicity manager for the Co-operative Wholesale Society. During the war he held commissioned rank in the Home Guard which gave service in the East End during the blitz. He was the organizer of the C.W.S. trades exhibitions in England.

He is 39, was educated in elementary schools, and is a printer’s auctioneer and valuer.
