    BIOGRAPHY :

    Mr. Leslie Hore-Belisha was in Parliament continuously from 1924 until 1945 as representative of Devonport, first as a Liberal National and from 1942 as an Independent. He fought the 1945 General Election as a National candidate, and later joined the Conservative Party. He was Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade in 1931 and Financial Secretary to the Treasury in 1932. As Minister of Transport he introduced the familiar ” Belisha beacons.” He was Secretary of State for War from 1937-40, and a member of the War Cabinet. While he was Minister of National Insurance in the ” caretaker ” Government, the family allowances measure was passed. Born in 1893 and educated at Oxford and Heidelberg, he served in Salonika in the first world war.

He was at one time in a lifeboat crew.

    Mr. J. E. Ramsden is 26, and was educated at Eton, where in 1941 he won an open classical scholarship to Trinity College, Oxford, and in 1942 the Newcastle scholarship. Instead of going to the university he joined the Army, served in the war and was mentioned in dispatches. After the war he went to Oxford and was given his rugger Blue. After joining the family brewing business at Halifax, he returned to Oxford to complete a degree in political economy.

He won the seat for the Labour Party in 1945.

He served in both world wars, and in the latter was second in command of the 5th City of London (Press Battalion) of the Home Guard. The author of several publications on advertising, he has been chairman of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association Advertisement Committee and chairman of the Advertisement Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce.
