He fought with the International Brigade in Spain and was captured and sentenced to 30 years’ forced labour, but escaped. During the war he was a gun layer in the Royal Navy, serving in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

    Mr. Alfred Edwards was born in Middlesbrough 62 years ago. From an elementary school he entered industry as a boy, and while still a young man assumed control of the business. He is now a director of an old-established local ironworks, and is connected with many other enterprises. After serving on the town council, he won East Middlesbrough as a Labour candidate by a narrow majority i? 1935 and held the seat comfortably in 1945. His opposition to the Iron and Steel Act led to his expulsion from the Labour Party and later acceptance of the Conservative whip.

Born in 1911, he was educated at the Royal Grammar School, Newcastle on Tyne, and the College of Commerce, and when later he was employed by a colliery firm he lectured in his spare time for the W.E.A. During the war he joined The Durham Light Infantry, and was transferred to the Army Education Corps, being promoted to captain.

She is a member of the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House. From 1919 to 1920 she was a student and teacher at the University of Wisconsin, United States.

    Lt.-Col. R. K. Brown, a barrister practising on the Midland Circuit, was born in Calcutta in 1909. He was educated at Kingswood School, Bath, and Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and gained distinction both in legal scholarships and athletics. He was British hurdles champion in 1934. During the war he served with the 53rd Infantry Division and at Field-Marshal Montgomery’s headquarters. President of the Birmingham Liberal organization, he contested Stourbridge in 1945.

    Mr. J. J. Astor, is the youngest son of Viscount Astor. Aged 31, and educated at Eton and Oxford, Mr. Astor joined the Life Guards Supplementary Reserve in 1939 and served as a major in the Commandos at Dieppe and with airborne forces in Italy, France, Germany, and Norway, being awarded the Legion d’Honneur and the Croix de Guerre by the French. In 1949 he became secretary to Mr. R. A. Butler and was secretary to the British delegation at the Commonwealth Conference in Canada.
