    BIOGRAPHY :

    Mr. E. L. Mallalieu was Liberal M.P. for Colne Valley, a seat previously held by his father, from 1931 to 1935, and won Brigg in a by-election in 1948, having joined the Labour Party in 1945. Educated at Cheltenham and Oxford, he practised as a barrister in London and on the North-Eastern Circuit, but after a breakdown in health he left law for farming. He is aged 43, and is the brother of Mr. J. P. W. Mallalieu, the member for East Huddersfield.

    Mr. E. Kinghorn had unsuccessfully contested Hexham in 1935 against Col. D. Clifton Brown (the present Speaker) before becoming M.P. for Yarmouth in 1945. Formerly a languages master and a lecturer on economics, he served as an intelligence officer with the R.A.F. in the war, later was attached to Gen. Eisenhower’s headquarters staff, and subsequently was a staff officer on the Control Commission in Germany. He was born in 1907, and educated at Basle, Lille, and Leeds University.

    Brig. R. A. F. Thorp , defeated Lord (then Sir William) Beveridge in 1945. A regular soldier i with 27 years’ service, he was born in 1900 and j educated at Charterhouse and R.M.C., Quetta, being first commissioned in Skinner’s Horse in 1919. During the war I he was G.S.O.2, 3rd Division, France, 1939 ; D.A.Q.M.G. 1st Cavalry Division, Palestine, 1940; A.A.Q.M.G., 11th Division, Abyssinia, 1941 ; G.S.O.I, headquarters, East Africa, 1941 ; colonel in command, Northern Rhodesia, 1942 ; and brigadier commanding 31st Brigade, Abyssinian Frontier, 1943-45.

    BIOGRAPHY :

    Maj.-Gen. P. G. Whitefoord is 51 and the son of a Lincolnshire rector. Educated in Germany and at St. John’s School, Leather-head, he served as a Regular Army officer with The Lincolnshire Regiment and later the Royal Artillery from 1912 to 1945. He won the M.C. in the 1914-18 war. Between the two wars he held staff appointments in Britain and India, in 1939 he was a staff officer at G.H.Q. of the B.E.F., and took part in the Dunkirk evacuation. After commanding the 54th Divisional Artillery, he went to the planning staff at Shaef as a major-general in 1943. As Chief of Staff, Allied Land Forces, in the liberation of Norway, he received a Norwegian decoration, and retired from the Army in 1945.

During the war Mrs. Wills was in charge of the Coventry Citizens’ Advice Bureau and later was welfare officer to the Hampshire Women’s Land Army.
