NEWS STORY : Foreign Secretary Calls for Execution of Alireza Akbari to be Halted

STORY

James Cleverly, the Foreign Secretary, has called on the Iranian Government to halt the planned execution of British-Iranian national Alireza Akbari. In a statement Cleverly said that “this is a politically motivated act by a barbaric regime that has total disregard for human life”. The BBC have said that they have heard a statement from Akbari saying that he has been tortured in prison and forced to make a confession for a crime that he did not commit. The Iranian Government has claimed that Akbari, a former ex-deputy Iranian defence minister, spied for the British which is an allegation that he denies.
