To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, if her Department will review the decision by the Environment Agency to turn off five satellite pumping stations in 2017 operating in the Alt Crossens catchment.

By serving a two-year notice period on the five pumping stations in Alt Crossens, the Environment Agency intends to provide time for all local parties to agree on an alternative solution for managing the pumps. I hope all the local parties will continue to work with the Environment Agency to agree a way forward.

  • Charlotte Leslie – 2016 Parliamentary Question to the Department for International Development

Charlotte Leslie – 2016 Parliamentary Question to the Department for International Development

The below Parliamentary question was asked by Charlotte Leslie on 2016-02-02.

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development, if she will make an assessment of the effect on Nepal’s recovery from the 2015 earthquake of India closing border crossings into Nepal.

    Mr Desmond Swayne

We are deeply concerned about the impact of the blockages at the India-Nepal border on the supply and distribution of humanitarian goods. DFID is working on the ground to make sure that vital supplies reach those affected by the earthquake of early 2015. Through its partners, DFID is providing winter support to approximately 42,000 families (over 200,000 people). We welcome the adoption of the National Reconstruction Authority Bill and formation of the National Reconstruction Authority.

DFID and FCO Ministers have discussed their concerns with Ministers from the Governments of Nepal and India. The British Ambassador in Kathmandu is also working closely with others in the international community and is in close contact with Prime Minister Oli and his cabinet.

There has been an increase in the level of goods, including fuel, entering Nepal via India. Despite the main border crossing between the two countries remaining closed, between 60-70% of the usual amount of goods are entering Nepal through alternative border crossings.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, if he will take steps to reduce the number of older women having abortions.

    Jane Ellison

The Government’s A Framework for Sexual Health Improvement in England sets out as one of its ambitions reducing unintended pregnancies among all women of fertile age. Evidence shows that increased access to provision of the full range of contraception, particularly long-acting reversible contraception, can reduce unintended pregnancies and abortions in all women including older women. Local authorities are mandated to provide comprehensive, open access contraception advice and services.

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, how many and what proportion of UK fishing trips and hauls were (a) accompanied by fisheries observers and (b) electronically monitored by cameras in each of the last three years.

    George Eustice

UK fisheries observers accompanied 610 UK fishing trips in 2013, 755 in 2014 and 595 in 2015.

The number of vessels that have been electronically monitored using remote electronic monitoring (REM) equipment (which includes cameras) in each of the last three years (to and including 2016) is show in the table below.

    Year

    2014

    2015

    2016 (to 18/10)

    No. of vessels

    44

    45

    31

    No. of trips

    1214

    1652

    1005

While the number of vessels being electronically monitored is a low proportion of all UK vessels, those which are electronically monitored have a high catching capacity. For example, in 2015 some 82% of total landings by English vessels of North Sea cod were made by vessels monitored by REM equipment.

  • Fiona Bruce – 2015 Parliamentary Question to the Home Office

Fiona Bruce – 2015 Parliamentary Question to the Home Office

The below Parliamentary question was asked by Fiona Bruce on 2015-11-04.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what information her Department holds on the nature of enquiries received by the NSPCC human trafficking and modern slavery helpline between July 2014 and June 2015; and how many such calls were from survivors of human trafficking.

    Karen Bradley

The NSPCC-run modern slavery helpline was launched in July 2014, as part of a wider awareness-raising campaign, to better support potential victims of modern slavery. For the period July 2014 to July 2015, £50,000 was made available to the NSPCC to run the modern slavery helpline. To support the launch of the helpline, training was provided by existing staff in the NSPCC child trafficking advice centre, the Metropolitan police’s human trafficking unit and the Modern Slavery Unit to NSPCC call-handlers at zero cost.

The NSPCC helpline routinely records the number of contacts made each month, how they are made, and by whom. The helpline also records the gender, age and nationality of potential victims, where that information is known or presumed. Between 31 July 2014 and 31 July 2015 the NSPCC modern slavery helpline received, in total, 849 contacts. These were comprised of 491 referrals, 107 advice cases and 251 enquiries. During the period 31 July 2014 to 31 July 2015 the helpline received a total of 57 contacts from potential victims themselves and in that same period the NSPCC made 272 referrals to the police. The NSPCC does not hold data on the number of contacts referred to the helpline by the police and other agencies that were subsequently referred back to those agencies.
