    Mr. A. Gilzean, a retired printer, aged 71, won the seat in 1945. He served on Edinburgh Town Council for 21 years as a leading member of the Labour Party, and gave much time to housing and slum clearance and is a deputy lieutenant of the city. Wounded in the 1914-18 war, he undertook duties on the local war pensions committee.

    Lord John Hope, member for the old North Midlothian and Peebles division, is 35 and younger twin son of the Marquess of Linlith-gow. Educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, he served in the war at Narvik, Salerno, and Cassino, and was on the planning staff for the Anzio landing. He was twice mentioned in dispatches and rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel in the Scots Guards.

    Mr. D. H. Johnston, K.C., appointed Solicitor-General for Scotland in 1947, two days after becoming a K.C., did not enter Parliament until the next year, when he won Paisley at a by-election. Born in 1907, he was educated at Oxford and Edinburgh Universities and called to the English Bar in 1931 and to the Scottish Bar a year later. He is an authority on the Workmen’s Compensation Acts. In the last war he served with the 51st Division as a lieutenant-colonel.
