    Mr. J. McNicol, a chartered accountant, fought the seat in 1935 and is a former president of the Springburn Unionist Association. He served in the 1914-18 war with The Highland Light Infantry and was the first to rejoin his battalion in 1939, later serving as a lieutenant-colonel in the European campaign.

    Cmdr. R. A. Allan had a distinguished career in the Royal Navy and was the youngest officer to hold the rank of commander in the R.N.V.R. For his war service he was awarded the D.S.O., the O.B.E., French Legion of Honour, and American Legion of Merit, and was four times mentioned in dispatches. For a time he was attached to the British Embassy, Washington, and is interested in Anglo-American relations. He contested Dunbartonshire in 1945.

She was also a director of London Co-operative Society for 28 years, and four times president. She was born in 1879, and had an elementary school education. She was first returned as M.P. for Battersea South in 1945, when her majority was 7,225.
