    BIOGRAPHY :

    Mr. Selwyn Lloyd, K..C., first elected for Wirral in 1945, was born at West Kirby in 1904. At Cambridge he won an open classical scholarship, and was called to the Bar in 1930. During the war he was a brigadier on the General Staff of the Second Army. A K.C. in 1941, he became Recorder of Wigan in 1948, and has been chairman of Hoylake council. He was President of the Cambridge Union in 1927.

At the beginning of the war, he ran an ambulance station in the East End. Later he joined the Army, rose to major, and became a parachutist for the underground movement and a worker for the Maquis in France. He is .a member of the executive of the Liberal Party.

    Mr. F. Byers, Liberal Chief Whip in the last Parliament, won North Dorset from the Conservatives in 1945 for the first time in 21 years Aged 34, he was educated at Westminster College (he was the first exchange scholar with Milton Academy, Massachusetts) and Christ Church, Oxford, where he took an honours degree in politics, philosophy, and economics, and was a champion hurdler. In 1939 he enlisted as a private, and rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He served on the General Staff of 21 Army Group under Field-Marshal Lord Montgomery. He is a farmer and a law student at Gray’s Inn.

Sir Howard was a former Liberal M.P. for the county. Educated at Eton and Magdalen College, Oxford, Mr. Howard-Stepney is keenly interested in agriculture. He served in the Coldstream Guards during the war, and finished as A.D.C. to the G.O.C., Burma.
