He has travelled extensively in India, Europe, and America studying agricultural conditions, and has served on British delegations to the West Indies and Sarawak.

From 1908 he was an insurance agent and organized the Insurance Agents’ U nion. He was president of the National Federation of Insurance Workers for two years. In 1938 he was a trade union delegate to Russia as a guest of the U.S.S.R. Government. He served with the Navy in the 1914-18 war.

During the war he was a gun layer in the Royal Navy, serving in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
