The United Kingdom is upgrading its diplomatic representation in Venezuela by appointing an ambassador, restoring relations to their highest formal level. The Government says the decision will improve Britain’s ability to engage with Venezuelan institutions and support a transition towards democracy.
Britain downgraded its diplomatic presence amid international concern about political repression and the legitimacy of Venezuelan elections. Ministers stressed that appointing an ambassador does not change the Government’s assessment of the country’s 2024 electoral process or indicate support for any Venezuelan political party.
The United Kingdom follows the diplomatic convention of recognising states rather than particular Governments. The appointment therefore represents a change in the level of engagement rather than formal approval of President Nicolás Maduro’s administration.
