Dan Thomas has resigned as leader of Reform UK in Wales after being arrested on suspicion of assault and controlling or coercive behaviour. Thomas said he was stepping down for personal reasons because he did not want the continuing investigation to distract from Reform’s work in the Senedd.
Gwent Police confirmed that a 45 year old man from Aberbargoed was arrested on Sunday 13 September and subsequently released on bail pending further inquiries. No charge has been brought and the allegations have not been tested in court. Thomas says he has done nothing wrong.
Thomas was appointed Reform UK’s Welsh leader by Nigel Farage in February 2026 and became leader of the opposition after the party won 34 seats at the May Senedd election. He intends to continue representing Casnewydd Islwyn and said he would support whoever succeeds him. Reform has not yet announced its arrangements for choosing a new Welsh leader.
