NEWS STORY : New food standards to change school menus in England

STORY

Schools in England will be required to provide vegetables with every main meal and offer more fruit, wholegrain food and pulses under revised Government food standards. The principal changes are due to take effect in September 2027, with additional time available for some secondary schools.

The rules will restrict deep fried food, processed meat, pizza and products containing high levels of sugar, salt or saturated fat. Sweetened baked desserts will have to include or be accompanied by fruit, while schools will be expected to offer pulses such as lentils, beans or chickpeas regularly.

Schools will also have to publish their menus and food policies online, while governing bodies will be given greater responsibility for overseeing compliance. Ministers say the reforms are intended to address childhood obesity, tooth decay and poor nutrition, although school leaders have warned that successful delivery will depend upon sufficient funding.
