After living in Canada for some years, he served in the 1914-18 war in The Gordon Highlanders and the Canadian Army. He was at the Ministry of Food in an administrative capacity in the last war and was deputy chief of the Unrra organization in Greece.

In 1940 he won Renfrewshire at a by-election, and held the seat in 1945. He served in the 1914-18 war, and was awarded the D.S.O. He was also in the Army in the last war until his election to Parliament.
