He is a member of the Railway Shopmen’s National Council and the Shipbuilding and Engineering Confederation.

He was born in 1876, and was adopted for North Newcastle at a meeting of the local association, which reversed a decision of the executive council that he should not be nominated because of age. He went to King’s School, Canterbury, and Magdalen College, Oxford, and has been a member of Durham County Council.
