He served on the Conservative Party policy committee on reforms in the administration of justice.

He is Deputy Lieutenant and a county alderman of Hampshire, and has been a member of the county council since 1926; is chairman of the Hampshire T.A. Association.

He lives near Ashford, and his grandfather and great-grandfather represented the division, then known as East Kent, as Conservative M.P.s.

He served in the civil defence organization in London during the war. He was elected to Paddington Borough Council in 1934, was mayor in 1947-49, and for 10 years served on the L.C.C. education committee. He is a member of the Hemel Hempstead New Town Development Corporation, and has broadcast on local government and town planning.
