He has served on several Parliamentary committees and is interested in land drainage, being vice-president of the Association of Drainage Authorities.

He served on the Conservative Party policy committee on reforms in the administration of justice.

He is Deputy Lieutenant and a county alderman of Hampshire, and has been a member of the county council since 1926; is chairman of the Hampshire T.A. Association.

He joined the Queen’s Westminsters and served during the war in north-west Europe. He was awarded the M.C. He lives near Ashford, and his grandfather and great-grandfather represented the division, then known as East Kent, as Conservative M.P.s.

Mr. George Tomlinson, born in 1890, has represented Farnworth since 1938, when he won the seat in a by-election. He left the weaving sheds after 12 yea?s and started business as a botanical brewer. During many years’ service on local authorities he devoted himself to education, and after entering Parliament and holding the posts of Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Works he succeeded the late Miss Ellen Wilkinson as Minister of Education in 1947.
