    Mr. J. S. Maclay, who is 45, entered Parliament in 19?0 as member for the former Montrose Burghs constituency, and retained the seat at the 1945 election. He was Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Production in 1945. He is the Leader of the National Liberal Party in the House of Commons. A son of the first Baron Maclay, he is interested in shipping and led the British Merchant Shipping Mission to Washington during the war. He was educated at Winchester and Trinity College, Cambridge.

    BIOGRAPHY :

    Mr. R. J. Mellish, aged 37, entered Parliament in 1946, as member for Rotherhithe. Appointed Parliamentary private secretary to the First Lord of the Admiralty in 1947, he, with others, was required to resign in June, 1949, for his vote on the Ireland Bill. He served in the Royal Engineers (Dock Section) during the war, and was demobilized as a captain. An official of the Transport and General Workers’ Union. On the direction of Mr. Attlee 30,000 copies of a speech by Mr. Mellish in Parliament on Communist influences in the London dock strike in 1949 were distributed among dockers.

He was Civil Lord of the Admiralty from 1939 to 1942 and Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Fuel and Power in the ” caretaker ” Government. He is a director of a firm of publishers of trade ?nd technical journals and treasurer of the National Association for the Prevention of Tuberculosis. He was created a. baronet in 1942.

    Mr. C. W. Gibson won the Kennington seat in 1945, but it disappeared in the redistribution. Born in 1889, he studied at Morley College, Rus-kin College and the London School of Economics, and was an official of the Transport and General Workers Union until elected to Parliament. For four years he was a member of the Central Housing Advisory Committee. Since 1943 he has been chairman of the London County Council Housing Committee.
