    BIOGRAPHY :

    Mr. E. Fernyhough was for 12 years a full-time official of the Union of Shop Assistants, Distributive and Allied Workers. He is 39, was born in a Staffordshire mining village, and first worked in the local colliery. He has since been closely associated with the Co-operative movement in Durham. In May, 1947, he was elected to Parliament for Jarrow, succeeding the late Miss Ellen Wilkinson.

At Oxford he took an honours degree in modern history and was chairman of the University Labour Club. Aged 33, he served in Europe in the war.

Aged 43, he won his way by scholarships from an elementary school to London University and was called to the Bar. He is a Profumo prizeman of the Inner Temple. As a practising barrister he has specialized in housing and town-planning law.

    Mr. A. C. Bossom, member for Maidstone since 1931, was born in London in 1881. At the age of 23 he went to the United States, where in 10 years he built up a large architectural practice. Since his retirement from business in 1926 he has given his time to the modernization of the building industry, and accompanied the British Building Mission to America in 1943. As an alderman of the London County Council he was chairman of the Slum Clearance Committee until 1934.

He was educated at Eton and Oxford, where he took B.Sc, and in 1935 joined Imperial Chemical Industries, becoming president of I.C.I. (New York) Limited, in 1938. After service with the British Purchasing Commission in the United States he was with the Ministry of Supply, and is technical consultant to I.C.I.
