Capt. J. A. L. Duncan was Conservative M.P. for North Kensington from 1931 to 1945. For several years he was Parliamentary private secretary to Mr. Leslie Burgin as Minister of Transport and Minister of Supply. He was a member of the L.C.C. from 1925 to 1928. Educated at Marl borough, he served in both wars with the Scots Guards. He is aged 50.

Mr. Emrys Hughes won this division in 1946. Son of a former Tony-pandy minister, he was born in 1894, and in 1924 married a daughter of the late Keir Hardie. A journalist, he has travelled a good deal in Europe, including Russia. He has also had long experience in local government, specializing in housing questions.

Mr. G. McAllister, who was born in 1906, was educated at Wishaw High School and Glasgow University. A public relations consultant, journalist, and author, he joined the Labour Party in 1924, and won Rutherglen from the Conservatives in the 1945 election. He is particularly interested in town and country planning and was secretary of the Town and Country Planning Association.

A Scottish Home Ruler for 30 years, he acted as his own election agent and contested the seat without the support of the local Nationalist organization.

He is also chairman of the Fulham panel of builders and a member of the area committee of the Master Builders’ Federation.
