Born in 1913, he was educated at Downside and Trinity College, Cambridge. He is a verderer of the New Forest. One of his ancestors sat in Parliament in Elizabeth’s reign.

    Mr. David L. – M. Renton, a doctor’s son, was born at Dartford in 1908 and educated at Oundle and University College, Oxford, where he was president of the Liberal Club in 1930. He was called to the Bar in 1933, has practised in London and on the So?th-East Circuit, and was elected to the Bar Council in 1939. Commissioned in the Territorial Army in 1938, he served with the Royal Artillery in the Middle East, becoming a major in 1943. Later he was president of the British Military Court in Tripolitania. He was elected National Liberal M.P. for Huntingdonshire in 1945.

    Mr. Percy Wells won the seat in the 1945 election. Aged 58, he left the Navy when 19 to visit America and the Empire, but returned to England in 1913 and became a supporter of the I.L.P., an organizer of the Workers’ Union, and a shop steward. Later he acted as agent for the Labour Party in the division. He has filled many offices in local government in Kent and served on the Central Agricultural Wages Board.
