He was president of the Union while at Oxford. Having served with the Lovat Scouts—raised by his father—in the last war, in 1945 he entered Parliament for the Stone division.

    Brig. A. H. Head was born in 1906 and educated at Eton and Sandhurst. Entering the Army as a career, he first joined the 15/] 9th Hussars and later transferred to The Life Guards. He served throughout the last war, being Assistant Secretary to the Committee of Imperial Defence, then on the staff of the Chief of Combined Operations, and later representative with the Director of Plans for Amphibious Operations. He entered Parliament in 1945 and is chairman of the Conservative Party’s subcommittee on the Army.

He has extensive business interests and is a large landowner in Mid-Sussex.

He was Labour deputy Chief Whip from 1935 to 1941, and successively Minister of Pensions and Postmaster-General. Born in 1883, he worked as a boy with his father at the coal face, married at 20, later studied mining at University College, Nottingham, and became a checkweighman.
