Mr. E. C. Mekie, a solicitor, aged 42, is the son of a Leith head master and was educated at George Watson’s College, Edinburgh, and Edinburgh University. He specialized in the law governing electiicity supply, and joined Edmundson’s group of electrical power companies, becoming secretary and director of 15 concerns. He left the industry on nationalization and is now director of companies mainly in the chemical and allied industries.

Sir Arthur Young, who represented the Partick division from 1935 to the dissolution, is a director of a Glasgow firm of carpet manufacturers. He was the Scottish Conservative Whip in 1942, and then successively a Lord Commissioner of the Treasury and Vice-Chamberlain of the Household. From 1941 to 1949 he was a member of the executive of the National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations. He is a keen yachtsman and has raced in America.

Mr. Hector McNeil made two unsuccessful attempts to enter Parliament before being elected unopposed in this division at a by-election in 1941. He was Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport in 1942, and in 1945 was appointed Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and later Minister of State, in which capacity he represented Great Britain at a number of important international proceedings, and frequently deputized for Mr. Ernest Bevin. Born in 1910 and educated at Glasgow University, he became a journalist on the staff of a Scottish national newspaper.

Mr. H. R. Spence is managing partner in a firm of woollen manufacturers and a director of other companies. He is 52 and served with the Royal Flying Corps in the 1914-18 war. In 1939 he formed and commanded 151 Squadron, Air Defence Cadet Corps, later the A.T.C., and resigned his commission as wing commander in 1945 on giving up command of the north-east area, A.T.C. He was elected for Central Aberdeenshire in 1945.

BIOGRAPHY :

Sir Archibald Sinclair was Secretary of State for Air during the war. He is a former Secretary of State for Scotland and after 23 years in Parliament, lost his membership for this division in 1945, when he was Leader of the Liberal Party in the House of Commons. Born in 1890, he went to Eton and Sandhurst, and he is Hon. LL.D. of Edinburgh and Glasgow Universities. He entered the Army in 1910, and was personal military secretary to Mr. Churchill when Secretary of State for War, 1919-21, and his private secretary at the Colonial Office in 1921-22. He is Lord Lieutenant of Caithness and has been Lord Rector of Glasgow University.

Lord Malcolm Douglas-Hamilton, born in 1909, is a brother of the Duke of Hamilton. He served in the Royal Air Force from 1939 to 1945, latterly as wing commander, and won the D.F.C. In 1945 he was commandant of the A.T.C. in Scotland. He is chairman of the Outdoor Training Committee of the Central Council of Physical Recreation (Scotland) and mountaineer.

He was a local councillor for 16 years, and during the war acted as convener of civil defence. He has been a member of several Parliamentary delegations abroad. He won Motherwell for the Labour Party in 1945.
