A society debutante in 1939, she was trained as a nurse for four years, joining the French Red Cross during the war. She served with the First French Army, passed through the enemy lines and nursed members of the Maquis in hiding. She received the Croix de Guerre. Later, Miss Lees was attached to the French Ministry of Information and the French Foreign Office.
