BIOGRAPHY :

Mr. Alfred Barnes has represented the constituency since 1922, except for one break in 1931-35. Born in I887, he was first an artist in gold and silver. He was the first president of the London – Co-operative Society and held the office nine years, and has been chairman of the Cooperative Party for 21 years. A former Labour Whip and junior Lord of the Treasury, he became Minister of Transport in 1945.
