  • Marsha de Cordova – 2021 Comments on Independent Windrush Committee

Marsha de Cordova – 2021 Comments on Independent Windrush Committee

The comments made by Marsha De Cordova, the Shadow Secretary of State for Women and Equalities, on 20 June 2021.

This injustice cannot continue. The Windrush Compensation Scheme must be placed under independent leadership away from the Home Office so that people can finally receive the compensation they deserve.

The Windrush scandal was an example of racial injustice, which is still experienced by many Black Caribbean people across British society.

That is why the next Labour government will introduce a Race Equality Act, to systematically tackle structural and institutional racism.

  • Nick Thomas-Symonds – 2021 Comments on Independent Windrush Committee

Nick Thomas-Symonds – 2021 Comments on Independent Windrush Committee

The comments made by Nick Thomas-Symonds, the Shadow Home Secretary, on 21 June 2021.

Windrush Day is an historic day in our national story – and we owe the Windrush generation an enormous debt of gratitude.

Shamefully, the mishandling of the Windrush Compensation Scheme by Conservative Ministers has heaped insult upon injustice. The numbers speak for themselves, with fewer than 700 people receiving compensation and least 21 people have died waiting for justice.

Labour is calling for urgent action to overhaul the scheme, by placing it under independent leadership away from the Home Office. This is to help restore faith in the process and quickly get compensation to people who have been so appallingly treated. This injustice cannot continue.

  • Ed Miliband – 2021 Comments on Furlough Payments

Ed Miliband – 2021 Comments on Furlough Payments

The comments made by Ed Miliband, the Shadow Business Secretary, on 21 June 2021.

Businesses have done right by our country during this crisis and the Government must do right by them. But Ministers have repeatedly failed to grasp the simple principle that public health restrictions must be matched by fair economic measures.

A month’s delay may seem like a short time, but for businesses legally closed from trading or those hanging on by their fingertips from going under and relying on the summer season the delay is another blow. That businesses unable to reopen are being sent huge bills defies logic. Unless Ministers take action, we risk pushing more firms over the edge.

  • David Lammy – 2021 Comments on Reduced Juries

David Lammy – 2021 Comments on Reduced Juries

The comments made by David Lammy, the Shadow Justice Secretary, on 22 June 2021.

Labour first called for war-time juries of six in most cases until restrictions were lifted back in January.

But instead of taking the bold actions needed to clear the backlog, the government dithered and delayed.

The result is a record-breaking backlog, with tens of thousands of victims being denied justice and countless criminals being let off the hook.

  • Liz Kendall – 2021 Comments on Social Care Reform

Liz Kendall – 2021 Comments on Social Care Reform

The comments made by Liz Kendall, the Shadow Minister for Social Care, on 22 June 2021.

Since Boris Johnson first promised he had a plan to ‘fix the crisis in social care once and for all’ more than 23 months ago, 2 million people have had their requests for care turned down, care workers and families have been stretched to breaking point, and thousands of people have had to sell their homes to pay for their care.

After a decade of failure, the time for Conservative excuses has long passed – Ministers must bring forward plans as a matter of urgency, and provide all older and disabled people with the dignity and security they deserve.

  • Boris Johnson – 2021 Comments on Amazon Destroying Large Quantities of Unsold Stock

Boris Johnson – 2021 Comments on Amazon Destroying Large Quantities of Unsold Stock

The comments made by Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister, on 21 June 2021.

It sounds incredible to me, an indictment of a consumerist society, if it’s as you say, we will look into it.

Obviously we don’t like stuff going to landfill under any circumstances that’s why we have the landfill tax and landfill credit scheme, and everything else.

I’m afraid it’s one of those things we’re just going to have to look into and get back to you.

We want to see more reuse, we want to see more recycling but above all we want to stop people using things that are going to be, ultimately, polluting our seas, our world and that means cutting down our use of plastics, you name it.

  • Rupert Matthews – 2021 Statement on Disorder in Oakham

Rupert Matthews – 2021 Statement on Disorder in Oakham

The statement issued by Rupert Matthews, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, on 20 June 2021.

I have received several complaints about the event at Rutland showground, and I am distressed to hear how little regard has been given to the residents of Oakham. There’s been intimidation and dangerous driving, not to mention breaking the covid rules.

I have contacted the Chief Constable demanding an update now and a meeting tomorrow. Of course, I fully support the work that Rutland Police do in the action they are taking and urge residents with concerns to please dial 101.

  • Kevin Tighe – 2021 Statement on Disorder in Oakham

Kevin Tighe – 2021 Statement on Disorder in Oakham

The statement issued by Kevin Tighe, the CEO of Rutland Agricultural Society, on 19 June 2021.

We are currently hosting a religious festival on our site which we are aware is causing disturbance to our neighbours. We wholeheartedly apologise for this. We agreed to the booking after assessing the organisers risk assessment and with the belief that this was an event primarily about Christian worship. However there is a minority of people who are disrupting the event and causing significant problems around the showground. Our priority is to help maintain public order and minimise disruption and allow the event to refocus on its Christian worship as quickly and quietly as possible. We have been in contact with the police who have been on site today.

  • Jim McMahon – 2021 Comments on Northern Powerhouse Rail

Jim McMahon – 2021 Comments on Northern Powerhouse Rail

The comments made by Jim McMahon, the Shadow Secretary of State for Transport, on 21 June 2021.

Warm words and vague promises, the likes of which we have seen from the Prime Minister during recent by-election campaigns, are simply not good enough. Labour will not stand by while cities like Bradford – among those set to benefit most from vital infrastructure upgrades – risk being stifled by this government’s failure to keep its side of the bargain.

Our party is clear – Northern Powerhouse Rail should be built. Estimates predict it will connect millions more people and thousands of businesses and help tackle our imbalanced economy.

  • Eluned Morgan – 2021 Comments on Keeping Wales Safe

Eluned Morgan – 2021 Comments on Keeping Wales Safe

The comments made by Eluned Morgan, the Welsh Minister for Health and Social Services, on 21 June 2021.

As we move into the summer months, now is not the time to be complacent. Coronavirus has not disappeared, and the transmission of the Delta variant reminds us just how quickly it can spread.

Our fight against this virus depends on the actions we all take together and we need to keep doing all those things which have helped keep us, our families and Wales safe. We all must ensure that we continue to follow the guidelines on social distancing, washing our hands, wearing face coverings, and limiting our contact with people indoors to keep Wales safe and keep transmission as low as possible. We must also try to meet people outdoors if we can, and to keep indoor spaces well-ventilated.

Testing is especially important as new variants emerge to help identify positive cases and manage outbreaks more effectively. I would like to remind anyone who has symptoms – even if they are mild – to follow the self-isolation guidelines and to arrange a PCR test.

If we all take responsibility and keep the guidelines at the front of our minds, we will have the best chance of getting back to doing the things we miss most.
