PRESS RELEASE : American historian Timothy Snyder becomes an ambassador for the UNITED24 platform, launching the ‘Shahed Hunter’ fundraiser [November 2022]

The press release issued by the President of Ukraine on 2 November 2022.

The Professor of History at Yale University, Timothy Snyder, has joined the team of the UNITED24 fundraising platform, initiated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He became the second ambassador after actor Mark Hamill who will focus his efforts on fundraising for Defence and Demining.

Timothy Snyder met with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in person, during his September visit to Kyiv. Recently, the famous historian made his course of Yale University lectures, “The Making of Modern Ukraine,” available for everyone. It has already gained almost 3 million views. Now he will be supporting Ukraine in his new role as UNITED24 ambassador. Snyder will raise funds for an anti-drone system to counter the UAVs constantly used by Russia to attack Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.

“Timothy Snyder is an outstanding historian and a true friend of Ukraine, who tells the whole world about the importance of Ukraine, its true history, values, the way they were shaped, and why we need to protect them, in his works. I am also grateful that more people will understand, not only about the reasons and preconditions of our fight, but also learn about how they can help us,” said Zelenskyy.

“I’m supporting Ukraine because Ukraine must win this war. Ukrainian victory will open the region and the world to democracy and give us all hope. But for now, Ukraine is threatened. Much of Ukraine is under occupation. The aggressor, breaking all the laws of war, seeks to kill civilians and to deprive them of the basic means of existence such as food, water, and electricity. To protect Ukrainians, to protect Ukraine, and thereby to defend all these values, we must be able to stop these attacks,” Timothy Snyder said.

“I’m a historian and a scholar and in the long run I want to be raising money to rebuild libraries, schools, and universities. But right now, we have to do what is more urgent, which is to raise money to help Ukraine to defend itself from murderous drones. That is why I have set my goal as raising $1.25 million for anti-drone defense,” said Snyder.

UNITED24 is a fundraising platform, initiated by the President of Ukraine. It is the central venue for charitable donations in support of Ukraine. During the first six months of operation, UNITED24 collected $213 million from citizens of 110 countries worldwide. Among UNITED24 ambassadors are famous athletes – Andriy Shevchenko, Elina Svitolina and Oleksandr Usyk, creative director of Balenciaga – Demna, American actors – Liev Schreiber and Mark Hamill, music band Imagine Dragons, singer and actress Barbra Streisand, astronaut Scott Kelly.

  • PRESS RELEASE : President held a meeting on the results of the first parliamentary summit of the Crimea Platform [November 2022]

PRESS RELEASE : President held a meeting on the results of the first parliamentary summit of the Crimea Platform [November 2022]

The press release issued by the President of Ukraine on 1 November 2022.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy chaired a meeting on the results of the first parliamentary summit of the Crimea Platform, which took place on October 24-26 in Zagreb (Croatia).

As noted, representatives of the parliaments of 42 countries, as well as heads of five parliamentary assemblies of international organizations and associations, including the European Parliament, took part in it. A demonstration of strong international support for Ukraine was the participation in the summit of the leaders of the parliaments of the G7 countries, in particular Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.

The summit participants clearly confirmed that Crimea is Ukraine, and Russia’s attempt to annex it is a gross violation of international law and will never be recognized by the international community. Ukraine’s struggle against Russian aggression is a struggle for democratic values, and the entire free democratic world has united in support of our country. The Zagreb summit also sent a clear signal: Russia must be held to account for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Ukraine.

Following the summit, a Joint Declaration was adopted, which confirmed commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders; non-recognition and condemnation of Russia’s temporary occupation and illegal annexation of Crimea, as well as any other occupied territories of Ukraine; condemnation of systematic violations of human rights and long-term militarization of the Crimean peninsula.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the model of reintegration, restoration and development of the Ukrainian Crimea, which should be ready for implementation as soon as the peninsula is freed from the temporary occupation.

The participants of the meeting also adopted a decision to hold the third summit of the Crimea Platform at the level of heads of state and government next year.

  • PRESS RELEASE : Andriy Smyrnov held a meeting of the working group on the creation of a special international tribunal on the crime of aggression [November 2022]

PRESS RELEASE : Andriy Smyrnov held a meeting of the working group on the creation of a special international tribunal on the crime of aggression [November 2022]

The press release issued by the President of Ukraine on 1 November 2022.

Deputy Head of the Office of the President Andriy Smyrnov held a meeting of the working group on the creation of a special international tribunal on the crime of aggression against Ukraine.

People’s deputies, representatives of the government and the Prosecutor General’s Office took part in the meeting.

Andriy Smyrnov, who is the coordinator of the working group, emphasized that despite the functioning of the mechanisms of the UN Security Council and the International Criminal Court, the creation of a special international tribunal is the only alternative for holding Russia to account for the crime of aggression.

“We are creating a special tribunal as a punishment mechanism for crimes of aggression that has no alternative. There are no other working and effective options. It is not enough to simply admit it, it must be brought to the attention of the whole civilized world. Indeed, we sincerely thank everyone who supported us on this difficult path of reviving international law and responsibility from a century-old coma. But for the sake of a peaceful future, we must punish the hostile and aggressive tumor on the world map. And we must do it as soon as possible. For the sake of peace, security and in the name of all innocent people in Ukraine executed and maimed by the aggressor country,” he said.

According to the Deputy Head of the Office of the President, the special international tribunal should become an internationally recognized and maximally legitimate legal instrument, the jurisdiction of which will be recognized by as many countries as possible.

“We call on major democracies, major continental countries, which globally shape security policy in the world, to take the role of leaders in the process of forming a special tribunal,” emphasized Andriy Smyrnov.

As noted at the meeting, the political decisions made by the partner countries in support of the creation of an international tribunal should be transformed into practical steps. Thus, in the Netherlands, it is planned to create an Interim Prosecutor’s Office so that representatives of the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine can start forming the evidence base for the crime of aggression and preparing charges.

As Anton Korynevych, Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, informed the participants of the meeting, the European Parliament, the Parliamentary Assemblies of the Council of Europe, the OSCE and NATO, as well as the parliaments of the partner countries, supported the creation of the tribunal in their resolutions.

Anton Korynevych noted that work is ongoing with representatives of the governments of other states to discuss the creation of a special international tribunal.

Representatives of the Prosecutor General’s Office informed about the investigation of proceedings related to crimes of aggression.

The participants of the meeting emphasized the expediency of conducting systematic work with the parliaments of the partner countries to advocate the idea of creating a special tribunal. In addition, it is necessary to intensify the practical dialogue with the professional scientific community, mass media and international lawyers of these states.

The issue of organizing thematic events in the countries of the world with the presentation of a special international tribunal was also considered.

PRESS RELEASE : President of Ukraine had a phone call with the President of France [November 2022]

The press release issued by the President of Ukraine on 1 November 2022.

As part of the regular dialogue, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a phone call with President of France Emmanuel Macron.

The heads of state discussed the new wave of missile terror by Russia and the security situation on the frontline.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for decisive action by the international community in response to the terrorist attacks of the Russian Federation. The President of Ukraine noted the urgency of creating an air shield over our country to protect critical infrastructure and civilians from Russian missile attacks. The parties discussed France’s further military support for Ukraine, including the provision of air defense systems.

Particular attention was paid to the issues of food security and the situation with the implementation of the grain initiative after Russia’s unilateral withdrawal from it.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy assured that Ukraine is ready to continue participating in the implementation of grain agreements together with the UN and Türkiye.

“Continuation of the initiative is critically necessary. It is an important element of global food security,” the Ukrainian Head of State emphasized.

The parties also exchanged views regarding the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP and the ongoing nuclear blackmail by the Russian Federation. Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Russian accusations against Ukraine of allegedly preparing to use a “dirty bomb” are another element of nuclear blackmail on the part of Russia. He said that at the invitation of the Ukrainian side, IAEA experts visited peaceful objects in Ukraine and had the opportunity to convince themselves that the accusations of the Russian Federation were unsubstantiated.

Special attention was paid to the involvement of France in the reconstruction of our country, in particular in the restoration of energy infrastructure facilities damaged as a result of recent Russian attacks. The heads of state agreed to hold in Paris in December, in coordination with international partners, a conference on the recovery of Ukraine, which will be preceded by a separate event aimed at mobilizing French companies to support our state.

  • PRESS RELEASE : Kyrylo Tymoshenko discussed with the UNICEF Ukraine Representative the urgent issues of support for Ukrainians during the war [November 2022]

PRESS RELEASE : Kyrylo Tymoshenko discussed with the UNICEF Ukraine Representative the urgent issues of support for Ukrainians during the war [November 2022]

The press release issued by the President of Ukraine on 1 November 2022.

Deputy Head of the Office of the President Kyrylo Tymoshenko held a meeting with UNICEF Ukraine Representative Murat Sahin.

The parties discussed the issue of preparing schools for the education of Ukrainian children in war conditions and coordinated the relevant joint work.

Murat Sahin reminded that in the framework of the “Studying Together” initiative launched by the Ministry of Education and Science in cooperation with UNICEF Ukraine and First Lady Olena Zelenska to support the educational process in the current academic year, a thousand hub schools will receive USD 3 million for relevant needs.

In addition, Kyrylo Tymoshenko spoke about the government’s plans to organize heating points in the country for the winter period, where people could stay at a time when their homes may be left without heating and electricity. These points will have generators, drinking water and food, and internet connection. According to the Deputy Head of the President’s Office, about 17,000 generators will be needed for this.

“We want to equip these heating points on the basis of schools and kindergartens in big cities and in administrative buildings in rural areas,” he said.

Kyrylo Tymoshenko noted that Ukraine would welcome assistance from international organizations in the implementation of this project.

Murat Sahin emphasized the importance of such an idea and confirmed UNICEF’s readiness to support the project on the equipment of heating points in the framework of the “Studying Together” initiative in schools and kindergartens.

He also informed about the aid and projects that UNICEF has already implemented and is currently implementing in Ukraine to support citizens during the war, in particular in the coming winter period.

  • PRESS RELEASE : Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with the European Commissioner for Energy [November 2022]

PRESS RELEASE : Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with the European Commissioner for Energy [November 2022]

The press release issued by the President of Ukraine on 1 November 2022.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a meeting with European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson.

The Head of State thanked the European Commissioner for his visit to Ukraine precisely at the time when the energy infrastructure faces massive attacks by missiles and drones from Russia.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy also noted the role of Kadri Simson in Ukraine’s accession to the European power grid ENTSO-E. He reminded that after accession, our state began to export electricity to Europe and can act as one of the guarantors of the stability of the EU energy system.

“Unfortunately, due to the strikes of missiles and kamikaze drones by the Russian Federation on our energy system, we have suspended this process. But I am sure that we will restore everything, and in a calmer time, when the situation in our energy system will be stabilized, we will continue exporting electricity to Europe,” the President of Ukraine emphasized.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy informed the European Commissioner about the consequences of Russia’s energy terrorism, which has already seriously damaged about 40% of the entire energy infrastructure of Ukraine, in particular thermal power plants, combined heat and power plants and hydroelectric power plants, as well as about the measures taken by our state to stabilize the work of the power grid.

The interlocutors discussed further steps to ensure Ukraine’s energy security. The Head of State spoke in detail about Ukraine’s needs for the restoration of energy infrastructure and called on the European Commission to play a coordinating role in attracting assistance from EU member states.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy drew attention to the expediency of creating a platform to support the Ukrainian economy, in particular the energy sector, similar to the Contact Group in the “Ramstein” format.

“Such a platform, such an “economic Ramstein”, is being built and will start working. Today, the issue of energy goes hand in hand with the financial crisis and the shortage of weapons, therefore such a platform should be created,” the Head of State is convinced.

The parties paid special attention to the further strengthening of energy sanctions against the Russian Federation. The President of Ukraine called for the introduction of price caps on Russian gas in addition to the price caps on oil, as well as to limit the supply of Russian liquefied gas to EU countries in the framework of the next sanctions package, which must be approved as soon as possible.

  • PRESS RELEASE : Samuel Cortez jailed for sexual assault of 11-yr-old girl in North Finchley [November 2022]

PRESS RELEASE : Samuel Cortez jailed for sexual assault of 11-yr-old girl in North Finchley [November 2022]

The press release issued by the Met Police on 14 November 2022.

A man who abducted a young girl from a bus stop and sexually assaulted her in a nearby park has been jailed.

Samuel Cortez, 38 (07.02.84) of Nether Street, N12 was jailed for nine years at Harrow Crown Court on Thursday, 10 November after pleading guilty to sexual assault of a child under the age of 13. He was also sentenced to three years and nine months’ imprisonment for child abduction – the sentence will run concurrently.

During the sentencing, the Judge ordered Cortez to be on licence for five years on completion of his sentence – he will also be on the sex offenders register for life.

The incident happened at around 16:00hrs on 30 September 2021 as an 11-year-old girl was at a bus stop near Sussex Ring, N12. Cortez approached her and intimated he was in possession of a knife before grabbing her by the wrist and leading her to a nearby park.

He then sexually assaulted the girl before leaving the area.

An investigation was launched which included an extensive analysis of CCTV from around the area of the incident. An image of the suspect was identified and this was subsequently distributed publicly through a media appeal.

As a result of this appeal, police received two calls from members of the public identifying Cortez as the man in the image. He was arrested on 15 December 2021, taken into police custody and subsequently charged.

Detective Constable Chris Finnegan, of the North West Command Unit led the investigation, and said: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the young girl but she, with the support of her family, has shown immense courage and strength in supporting our investigation. I hope it offers some reassurance that the man responsible is now behind bars.

“Identifying Cortez was a combination of diligent police work along with the support of the public. This is a great example of how policing should work and it has resulted in a vile individual being taken off the streets.”

  • PRESS RELEASE : Planned student loan interest rates cut again from due to market rates [November 2022]

PRESS RELEASE : Planned student loan interest rates cut again from due to market rates [November 2022]

The press release issued by the Department for Education on 15 November 2022.

Student loan borrowers will be further protected from rising inflation rates with additional cuts to planned interest rates from September for those on Plan 2 and Plan 3 loans.

Student loan interest rates will now be capped at 6.3% from September 2022. The government intervened in June to protect borrowers in response to the rise in the rate of RPI due to global economic pressures which meant student loan borrowers faced a 12% interest rate in September.

To provide reassurance for student loan borrowers on Plan 2 (undergraduate) and Plan 3 (Postgraduate) loans, the government used predicted market rates to bring forward a cap on interest rates to a maximum of 7.3%. The actual market rate is now 6.3%, so the cap has been reduced to this figure.

By setting an interest rate of 6.3% rather than the expected 12% this will bring down the student loan interest rates by the largest amount on record and will mean, for example, a borrower with a student loan balance of £45,000 would reduce their accumulating interest by around £210 per month compared to 12% interest rates. This is on the total value of the loan, as monthly repayments do not change.

The government is taking every opportunity to protect the public from the rising cost of living and global economic pressures.

Minister for Skills, Further and Higher Andrea Jenkyns said:

We understand that many people are worried about the impact of rising prices and we want to reassure people that we are stepping up to provide support where we can.

Back in June, we used predicted market rates to bring forward the announcement of a cap on student loan interest rates down from an expected 12% and we are now reducing the interest rate on student loans further to 6.3%, the rate applying today, to align with the most recent data on market rates.

For those starting higher education in September 2023 and any students considering that next step at the moment, we have cut future interest rates so that no new graduate will ever again have to pay back more than they have borrowed in real terms.

Monthly student loan repayments are calculated by income rather than interest rates or the amount borrowed. Unlike for commercials loans, repayments will stop for any borrowers who earn below the relevant repayment threshold.

A spokesperson for the Student Loans Company said:

The change in interest rates is automatically applied so customers don’t need to take any action. We encourage customers to use SLC’s online repayment service to regularly check their loan balance and repayment information, as well as ensure their contact information is up-to-date.

For new students from August 2023, student finance will be put on a more sustainable footing. Student loan interest rates will be reduced so that they will not, in real terms, repay more than they borrow.

In response to the rising inflation, the government is providing Cost of living support: help for households to help those struggling to make their incomes stretch to cover the basics. This includes providing 8 million of the most vulnerable households with £1,200 extra support this year, with all domestic electricity customers receiving at least £400. In early July, the National insurance contribution threshold was raised, giving the typical worker a tax cut of up to £330 per year, and millions of low-income households have now received the first instalment of their Cost of living payment.

  • PRESS RELEASE : Aberdeen call centre boss Liam Mccreadie hit with 4-year ban for £1million tax abuse [November 2022]

PRESS RELEASE : Aberdeen call centre boss Liam Mccreadie hit with 4-year ban for £1million tax abuse [November 2022]

The press release issued by HM Treasury on 15 November 2022.

Liam Mccreadie, 26, from Aberdeen, has been disqualified as a director for 4 years after failing to pay more than £1.1 million in taxes and not submitting tax returns for his two companies.

Mccreadie was the sole director of two companies that both traded as a call centre business.

Lakemere Global Holdings Ltd, was incorporated in October 2017 and traded as AGO Outsourcing in both East Kilbride and Newcastle until it went into liquidation in October 2019, owing more than £794,000.

His other company, EK Sales Ltd, was incorporated in September 2017 – just a month before Lakemere went into liquidation – and took over trading as AGO Outsourcing until it also went into liquidation in October 2020, with debts of more than £515,000.

The call centre sites had been billed by AGO Outsourcing managers as “state of the art” sales centres, but had reportedly become subject to disputes with staff over payment of wages by October 2019.

The liquidation of the two companies led to an investigation by the Insolvency Service which found that Lakemere Global Holdings Ltd had not submitted tax returns between May and October 2019 and owed business and employee-related tax of around £629,000.

Investigators also discovered that EK Sales Ltd had failed to submit tax returns between December 2019 and August 2020 and owed business and employee-related tax of around £513,000.

Across both companies, the repeat abuse of tax led to a debt to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) of more than £1,143,000.

The Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy accepted a disqualification undertaking from Liam Mccreadie, after he didn’t dispute that he had failed to ensure that both Lakemere Global Holdings Ltd and EK Sales Ltd submitted returns and payment to HMRC, and caused the companies to trade to the detriment of HMRC in respect of business and employee-related tax.

His disqualification starts on 7 November 2022 and lasts for 4 years. The ban prevents Mccreadie from directly or indirectly becoming involved in the promotion, formation or management of a company, without the permission of the court.

Steven McGinty, Investigation Manager at the Insolvency Service, said

“The Insolvency Service will rigorously pursue traders who seek an unfair advantage over their competitors by not paying tax to the Government.

“If you run a limited company, you have statutory protections as well as obligations. If you fail to comply with your obligations, The Insolvency Service will investigate you and you could lose the protection of limited liability.

“Mr McCreadie has paid the price for failing to do that, as he cannot now carry on in business other than at his own risk.”
