Kemi Badenoch – 2022 Comments on the Windrush Monument at London Waterloo

The comments made by Kemi Badenoch, the Communities Minister, on 22 June 2022.

This is a special moment in our nation’s history and I am grateful to all those who worked tirelessly to bring it into being.

Basil Watson’s sculpture perfectly captures the spirit of Windrush. In it we see the strength, hope and expectation of those who arrived with little and yet gave so much.

As a first-generation immigrant myself, the Windrush story resonates with me and it is important we recognise the contribution of those who have so enriched our country.

With millions of the lowest-income households soon seeing the first of two cash instalments land into their bank accounts, we are taking action to directly help families with the cost of living.

This one-off payment totalling £650 is part of our £37 billion cost of living support package that will put an extra £1,200 into the pockets of those most in need.

  • Robert Courts – 2022 Comments on Funding to Support the Mental Wellbeing of Seafarers

Robert Courts – 2022 Comments on Funding to Support the Mental Wellbeing of Seafarers

The comments made by Robert Courts, the Maritime Minister, on 23 June 2022.

Seafarer wellbeing is at the heart of our Maritime 2050 agenda and we know that mental health difficulties at sea affect thousands of seafarers. We are committed to tackling this and building a diverse, highly skilled and exciting sector across the board – from shipbuilders to bosuns.

This funding will help us tackle this problem by supporting the excellent work being done by charities and social organisations and fostering new programmes.

I am also pleased to be launching our recovery route map, which will help to build a resilient, innovative and future-facing maritime sector for generations to come.

  • Grant Shapps – 2022 Comments on Legislation to Allow Temporary Staff During Strikes

Grant Shapps – 2022 Comments on Legislation to Allow Temporary Staff During Strikes

The comments made by Grant Shapps, the Secretary of State for Transport, on 23 June 2022.

Despite the best efforts of militant union leaders to bring our country to a standstill, it’s clear this week’s strikes did not have the desired impact due to more people being able to work from home. However, far too many hard working families and businesses were unfairly affected by union’s refusal to modernise.

Reforms such as this legislation are vital and will ensure any future strikes will cause even less disruption and allow adaptable, flexible, fully skilled staff to continue working throughout.

  • Kwasi Kwarteng – 2022 Comments on Legislation to Allow Temporary Staff During Strikes

Kwasi Kwarteng – 2022 Comments on Legislation to Allow Temporary Staff During Strikes

The comments made by Kwasi Kwarteng, the Business Secretary, on 23 June 2022.

Once again trade unions are holding the country to ransom by grinding crucial public services and businesses to a halt. The situation we are in is not sustainable.

Repealing these 1970s-era restrictions will give businesses freedom to access fully skilled staff at speed, all while allowing people to get on with their lives uninterrupted to help keep the economy ticking.

  • Anne-Marie Trevelyan – 2022 Comments on UK Trade Deal with Gulf Nations

Anne-Marie Trevelyan – 2022 Comments on UK Trade Deal with Gulf Nations

The comments made by Anne-Marie Trevelyan, the Secretary of State for International Trade, on 21 June 2022.

Today marks the next significant milestone in our 5-star year of trade as we step up the UK’s close relationship with the Gulf.

Our current trading relationship was worth £33.1 billion in the last year alone. From our fantastic British food and drink to our outstanding financial services, I’m excited to open up new markets for UK businesses large and small, and supporting the more than ten thousand SMEs already exporting to the region.

This trade deal has the potential to support jobs from Dover to Doha, growing our economy at home, building vital green industries and supplying innovative services to the Gulf.

The comments made by Ben Wallace, the Secretary of State for Defence, on 20 June 2022.

Backed by our formidable Defence industry, the UK has been one of the global leaders in providing military assistance to support Ukraine’s armed forces. Their creativity and commitment to this complex and demanding problem has been invaluable to helping resist the Russian invasion.

As this unprovoked attack continues and Russia’s tactics change, we are working closely with industry partners to provide innovative solutions that will bolster the heroic Ukrainian efforts for the coming weeks and months.

  • Caoimhe Archibald – 2022 Comments on the Cost of Living

Caoimhe Archibald – 2022 Comments on the Cost of Living

The comments made by Caoimhe Archibald, Sinn Fein’s Spokesperson on the Economy, on 18 June 2022.

For months the cost of living has been on a steep upward trajectory, inflation is now predicted to hit 11% over the next couple of months and this is impacting on workers, families and businesses.”Boris Johnson and his government need to listen to workers and act now.

While the Tory government did announce some measures in recent weeks, further action is urgently needed, particularly in relation to rising petrol and diesel costs.

Petrol and diesel prices are heading towards £2.00 per litre and many people are calculating the cost of every journey and only making the ones they can’t avoid.

The British government should act immediately to cut duty on fuel further and also slash VAT on fuel and energy.

Workers and families are struggling as their pay packets don’t go as far now as they previously would have, and we need to empower workers to uphold their rights to decent pay and conditions.

We need the DUP to join immediately with other parties to form an Executive so we can tackle the cost of living crisis and get money into the pockets of workers and families.

  • Sadiq Khan – 2022 Comments on Cool Spaces in London

Sadiq Khan – 2022 Comments on Cool Spaces in London

The comments made by Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, on 17 June 2022.

London in summer can be delightful but as temperatures rise it is vital we look after our own health and that of our friends and neighbours.

The people most at risk are the most vulnerable Londoners, including the elderly, those living alone, those with chronic or severe illnesses.

Common sense precautions can save lives so please stay hydrated and take advantage of London’s 4,000 free refill locations, 100 new water fountains, stay out of the sun either at home or in one of our Cool Spaces and avoid travelling at the hottest times of day if at all possible. With more places to keep cool and top up on free water than ever before, we are building a better and greener London for everyone.
