  • Gordon Brown – 2010 Message to the Winter Olympics Team

Gordon Brown – 2010 Message to the Winter Olympics Team

The message sent by Gordon Brown, the then Prime Minister, on 12 February 2010.

When Britain won the right to host the Summer Games in 2012, we did it with a promise to inspire a generation of young people in this country.

And as Great Britain’s team for the Vancouver Winter Olympics, you are now the most important torchbearers of that promise.

Nothing has more power to inspire young people than seeing our best athletes competing at the very pinnacle of their sport.

While you’re away, it will be hard to truly appreciate the impact that your performances over the next fortnight will be having at home.

But you will all be aware of the unique place that elite sportsmen and women hold in our culture – and the extraordinary relationship Britons have with our sporting heroes.

The country is tremendously proud of your achievements in reaching the Games – and proud of a team that can boast current world champions and a host of outstanding talent.

The whole nation is behind you – as ambassadors not only for your sport and your country, but also for London 2012.

I wish you every success and the very best of luck.

  • Michelle Donelan – 2023 Comments on the Privatisation of Channel 4

Michelle Donelan – 2023 Comments on the Privatisation of Channel 4

The comments made by Michelle Donelan, the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, on 5 January 2023.

Channel 4 is a British success story and a linchpin of our booming creative industries. After reviewing the business case and engaging with the relevant sectors I have decided that Channel 4 should not be sold.

This announcement will bring huge opportunities across the UK with Channel 4’s commitment to double their skills investment to £10 million and double the number of jobs outside of London. The package will also safeguard the future of our world leading independent production sector. We will work closely with them to add new protections such as increasing the amount of content C4C must commission from independent producers.

Nadine Dorries – 2023 Comments on Potential Reversal of Channel 4 Privatisation Plans

The comments made by Nadine Dorries, the Conservative MP for Mid Bedfordshire, on Twitter on 4 January 2023.

Three years of a progressive Tory government being washed down the drain. Levelling up, dumped. Social care reform, dumped. Keeping young and vulnerable people safe online, watered down. A bonfire of EU leg, not happening. Sale of C4 giving back £2b reversed. Replaced with what?

A policy at some time in the future to teach maths for longer with teachers we don’t yet even have to do so.

Where is the mandate- who voted for this?

Will now be almost impossible to face the electorate at a General Election and expect voters to believe or trust our manifesto commitments.

Wes Streeting – 2023 Comments on the NHS

The comments made by Wes Streeting, the Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, on Twitter on 2 January 2023.

The NHS is buckling under pressures that staff have been raising the alarm about for months and months. The Royal College of Emergency Medicine warns of hundreds of deaths each week. Where is the Government?!

  • Nova Fairbank – 2022 Comments on the Norwich Western Link

Nova Fairbank – 2022 Comments on the Norwich Western Link

The comments made by Nova Fairbank from Norfolk Chambers of Commerce.

The Norwich Western Link will facilitate easier access to both Norwich airport and Great Yarmouth port. It will further help to improve journeys into and around the west of the city, support potential housing and jobs growth; provide the infrastructure to manage the additional traffic this will create, and improve quality of life for people living in the area.

This final piece of the puzzle will ensure that Norfolk has infrastructure that will meet our growth ambitions. It will create stronger and more effective links to the Midlands and the North and will help Norfolk businesses to thrive and deliver greater economic growth and jobs.

  • Jerome Mayhew – 2022 Comments on the Norwich Western Link

Jerome Mayhew – 2022 Comments on the Norwich Western Link

The comments made by Jerome Mayhew, the Conservative MP for Broadland, in the House of Commons on 18 January 2022.

    Jerome Mayhew

I disagree with the hon. Member for Norwich South (Clive Lewis) about the western link road. We have created, essentially, an orbital route around Norwich, but rather like the situation with the M25 and the Thames, we have decided not to build the bridge. It is very damaging to connectivity, particularly for the north-east of the county getting access to the physical markets in the rest of the country—

    Clive Lewis

The hon. Gentleman talks about a bridge over the Thames, but this is a massive road bulldozed through an ecologically sensitive area. There were options to go over the most ecologically sensitive parts, but they were a bit more expensive and were rejected. I think that point needs to be made.

    Jerome Mayhew

I am grateful for the hon. Gentleman’s intervention. It is also a bridge over the River Wensum, as he knows. A consultation was undertaken and, taking that into account, the best route was reached. It deals with a huge amount of rat-running and links north Norfolk to the rest of the country.

  • Steve Barclay – 2022 Comments on Visitors from China Needing Covid Test

Steve Barclay – 2022 Comments on Visitors from China Needing Covid Test

The comments made by Steve Barclay, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, on 30 December 2022.

As Covid cases in China rise ahead of them reopening their borders next week, it is right for us to take a balanced and precautionary approach by announcing these temporary measures while we assess the data.

This allows our world leading scientists at the UK Health Security Agency to gain rapid insight into potential new variants circulating in China.

The best defence against the virus, however, remains the vaccine. NHS staff have done an incredible job delivering over 150 million jabs across the UK.

It isn’t too late to come forward, for your first, second, third, or autumn booster – it’s quick and easy and you can book online, on the NHS app, or just turn up at one of the many walk-in centres across the UK.

  • Jeremy Corbyn – 2022 Comments on the Death of Alice Mahon

Jeremy Corbyn – 2022 Comments on the Death of Alice Mahon

The comments made by Jeremy Corbyn, the Independent MP for Islington North, on 30 December 2022.

Very sad to hear that Alice Mahon, former MP for Halifax, has passed away.
Elected to Parliament in 1987, she was incredibly active on behalf of her constituents, fighting for workers’ rights on the picket line, anti-racism on the streets and international solidarity around the world.
Alice was a great socialist, never a crowd pleaser or career politician, with an acerbic but human wit, and never afraid to take her case into hostile territory.
Everyone who met Alice learned much from her about life, principles and determination. I found her a brilliant and loyal friend, on the good days and the bad.
I have this happy memory of her in the 2017 election campaign at a huge election rally in Hebden Bridge, on the front row beaming with hope and happiness.
An utterly brilliant, dogged and proud working-class campaigner, Alice was one of one of my best comrades and friends in Parliament. I will miss her terribly. My thoughts go to her family and the people of Halifax she served so well.
