  • Andy Burnham – 2022 Comments on Manchester Buses Coming Under Public Control

Andy Burnham – 2022 Comments on Manchester Buses Coming Under Public Control

The comments made by Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Manchester, on 17 August 2022.

The introduction of lower, simpler fares across our bus network signifies the biggest shake-up of our bus system in close to 40 years and comes at a critical time.

Hundreds of thousands of households across Greater Manchester are deeply worried about money, with fears of even higher bills just around the corner.

As the most used form of public transport, with around 2.5million trips every week across the city-region, introducing lower fares for bus passengers is the best way we can help the most people with the cost of travel right now.

Coupled with the extension of Our Pass, which provides free travel for 16 – 18-year-olds, we are taking steps to make an immediate and tangible difference to people’s lives by putting money back into their pockets.

While this is the right thing to do, we cannot at this point guarantee that this new fare structure will be permanent. It will be reviewed annually. But the more that people use the buses, the more likely it is that we will be able to sustain it.

  • Andy Burnham – 2010 Comments on David Cameron’s Policy on School Sports

Andy Burnham – 2010 Comments on David Cameron’s Policy on School Sports

The comments made by Andy Burnham, the then Shadow Education Secretary, on 20 December 2010.

David Cameron and Michael Gove have spent weeks seeking to justify a bad decision with dodgy statistics. Gove’s overruling by the Prime Minister is a victory for thousands of young people, teachers and athletes, and is a warning to this Tory-led Government that it cannot simply do what it likes. But this package from the Conservative-led Government, after weeks of scrabbling round for funding to save something it branded a “complete failure”, only raises one cheer at best.

So today, in conceding the success of Labour’s School Sports Partnerships, the Government has nevertheless failed to put in place a proper funding package that will allow us to capitalise on the excitement of the 2012 Games. We are still looking at the prospect of fewer children playing sport in the run up to the Olympics, and no answer on what will happen to school sport following the Games.

  • Andy Burnham – 2022 Comments on HS2 and Manchester

Andy Burnham – 2022 Comments on HS2 and Manchester

The comments made by Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, on 4 August 2022.

We cannot continue to repeat the mistakes of the past – failing to invest in central Manchester’s rail links has led to rail chaos across the North time and again.

This is a huge moment and the decisions that are made now will affect the prospects for people here in the North for hundreds of years to come. A second-class choice for HS2 at Manchester Piccadilly station will be a hammer blow to any prospects of really Levelling Up our country.

If we get the wrong solution at Piccadilly, it will limit economic growth, limit opportunities for local people and businesses, and limit the right rail solution for the whole of the North of England. This issue is of first order importance to our city-region, and it is only right that all MPs have the opportunity to debate and vote on the final plans for this once-in-a-century opportunity.

We are pleased that there has been some progress and welcome the comments from Liz Truss to fully commit to delivering the North’s version of Northern Powerhouse Rail. But if she is being true to her words, this must also include a reset moment on HS2 and the station at Piccadilly which is fundamental to the future of the North.

  • Andy Burnham – 2021 Comments on Government Announcement of Scrapping Rail Projects

Andy Burnham – 2021 Comments on Government Announcement of Scrapping Rail Projects

The comments made by Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, on 18 November 2021.

We’ve been given a second class plan here. And that’s been the story of our lives. We’ve always had put up with second best as northern people, ourselves and our residents.

And I guess what we’re saying is we’re not having it. Because we were told that we were going to be levelled up, and we were told it was going to be different. And different to me means coming to the front of the queue, and not always being told that the money’s run out and has been spent somewhere else. But that, I’m afraid, is implicit in what’s been announced today.

And this is not politics. This is about the future of the north of England for the next 100 or 200 years. That is the significance of the decisions that are being announced today. And we are not prepared to consign our grandchildren, great grandchildren and beyond to being second class citizens still when it comes to transport in this country.

We have got to fight for better for them and we have to do it together. We have to stand together as one north. If Bradford loses, Leeds loses out, Liverpool loses out and then we lose out as well.

  • Andy Burnham – 2021 Comments on Anti-Spiking Partnership

Andy Burnham – 2021 Comments on Anti-Spiking Partnership

The comments made by Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, on 10 November 2021.

Sacha [Lord] and I met with members of the Manchester Night In campaign and agreed to look at launching an Anti-Spiking Partnership with key venues in the city-region. Sacha is working up the details of this and we will convene a further meeting in two weeks’ time, I am hoping we can move quickly.

I want to thank the members of the Manchester Night In campaign for meeting with us. I saw the numbers of people participating in the protest and we are committed to taking tangible action.

Andy Burnham – 2021 Comments on Insulate Britain

The comments made by Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, on 2 November 2021.

I can’t see how this type of protest does anything other than alienate people from the climate cause. Have been reassured that Greater Manchester Police are working to get things moving as soon as possible.
