    Mr. E. Popplewell (50) was Vice-Chamberlain of the Household in the last Government. He captured West Newcastle from the Conserva-tiyes at the 1945 election with a majority of 8,131 in a straight fight. He was a signalman in the railway service and for 18 years was associated with local government. During the war he served with the Royal Marine Artillery and won the Belgian Croix de Guerre.

At present an export manager in the textile industry and commanding a Leicestershire Territorial regiment, he served during the late war with the Royal Horse Artillery in the Middle East, Italy and Austria. He has been chairman of the National League of Young Liberals and president of the Lancashire and Cheshire Young Liberals.

    Lt.-Col. J. C. Lockwood was M.P. for Central Hackney, 1931-35. He was unsuccessful at a by-election at Bexley in 1946. He is a barrister. In the first world war he served with The Essex Regiment and the Coldstream Guards, and was legal adviser to Shaef in the second. He is treasurer of the R.S.P.C.A., and a member of the Diocesan Finance Committee and of the London-over-the-Border Committee.

    Mr. A. G. F. Hall-Davis, head brewer and a director of a Burnley brewery, was born in Bolton in 1924. He served in the Royal Artillery during the last war. He has filled many offices in the Young Conservative movement, and was vice-chairman of its national committee from 1946 to 1948. He is area chairman of the committee for Lancashire, Cheshire and Westmorland, and has served on the executive of the National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations since 1946.

He was born in 1912 and educated at Harrow and Cambridge. Called to the Bar in 1935, he practised until 1939, when he joined the Cold-stream Guards and served througho?t the war. Engaged in industry in the Sheffield district, he is interested in industrial problems, especially in the coal industry, and he has been joint secretary of the Con-servatiye Parliamentary Fuel and Power Committee.

He was born in 1886, educated at Eton and Oxford, and entered the Diplomatic Service in 1911, resigning in 1923 to enter politics. Keenly interested in farming, he is a member of the council of the Royal Agricultural Society.
