In five years’ service with the Royal Artillery he began in the ranks and ended as a staff captain at General Eisenhower’s headquarters. He is 41.

    Capt. H. B. Houldsworth was born in 1922 and was educated at Huddersfield Technical College and Leeds University, where he qualified as a doctor. Before being called up, Capt. Houldsworth was senior anaesthetist at Leeds General Infirmary, and he is now in the R.A.M.C. He comes from a family with a Liberal tradition, his father, Sir H. Houldsworth, K.C., having contested Pudsey and Otley in 1929, and his mother is a Liberal member of the West Riding County Council.

    Mr. G. D. Wallace, aged 43, won the division in 1945, and became an assistant Government whip in 1947. He served in the R.A.F. during the war. From 1937 to 1946 he was a member of Chislehurst-Sidcup Urban District Council. In 1949 he attended the annual conference of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Stockholm. He has been a member of the Labour Party for 17 years and is specially interested in social welfare questions and the youth movement.

    Mr. T. C. Boyd, born in Canada in 1916, son of a former vicar of Minster, was educated at Marlborough, Oxford, and the London School of Economics. In 1941 he became Deputy Assistant Quartermaster-General at India G.H.Q., and in 1944 Under-Secretary to the Government of India. He was secretary to the Parliamentary delegation to India in 1946, afterwards principal of the central economic planning staff in the Cabinet office, and more recently attached to the Treasury.

    Mr. A. Fountaine, a native of Edinburgh, was educated at Stave College, Bucks, and the Army College, Aldershot. In 1937 he joined the Royal Navy but was invalided out. At Cambridge he took a chemistry degree and in the war was engaged on experimental work at Woolwich. Although adopted by the local Conservative association his candidature at this election was not recognized by the party Standing Advisory Committee at headquarters.

    Lt.-Col. H. C. Bazeley is 42, and after going to Blundell’s School, Devon, and Woolwich, joined the Royal Artillery in 1927, and retired 18 months ago. During the war he raised and commanded the original Air Observation Post Squadron, R.A.F., in the North African campaign, and was awarded the D.S.O. He was in the invasion of Normandy, and was mentioned in dispatches and awarded the American D.S.C.
