Mr. A. E. V. A. Farrer unsuccessfully contested this seat in 1945. Aged 53, and works manager for a London engineering firm, he has been prominent in left-wing politics for more than 30 years. He founded the Padding-ton branch of the I.L.P., but later became secretary of the Paddington Trades Council and Labour Party.

Capt. J. B. O’Hara, aged 33, clothing factory manager, was educated at Bolton Grammar School, of which he is now chairman of the governors. He has served the local Labour Party in many capacities and has been a member of the town council for four years. He served in the R.A.S.C. in the war and was discharged with the honorary rank of captain.

Mr. A. Crawford, a farmer in the county and ex-member of the county council, fought the seat in 1945. He is on the county agricultural executive committee, was chairman of the farmers’ union in 1925, and is an hon. member of the Union of Agricultural Workers. He has been chairman without salary for 20 years of Melton Farmers’ Co-operative Society, which has an annual turnover of £4m.

Spence, K.C., a barrister, aged 47 and 6ft. 7in. tall, was in the last great diamond rush in South Africa, and afterwards worked a passage to Canada as a cabin steward and hitch-hiked across the Dominion. He served on Air Marshal Cqnyngham’s staff in the Western Desert during the war, and after demobilization took silk. He practises in London.

He took part with Combined Operations in the Mediterranean and Northwest European landings, gained the United States Legion of Merit, Salerno, 1943, and was mentioned in dispatches in 1944.

Mr. R. J. Taylor was first elected for Morpeth in 1935. He is 68 years of age, and is a miner. He has been a member of Blyth Borough Council and Northumberland County Council. In the war-time National Government he acted as Labour Whip, and in 1945 he was appointed a Lord Commissioner of the Treasury and Deputy Chief Whip.

Lt.-Col. N. W. Elliott, a china manufacturer of Stoke-on-Trent, is a member of the council of the Liberal Party and contested Newcastle-under-Lyme in 1945. He was educated at Tettenhall College and Birmingham University. He was mentioned in dispatches in the 1914-18 war, and in the last war was, first, colonel in the M.I. branch, and later in charge of the 16th Staffs Home Guard.
