During the war he was warden of an agricultural hostel near Guildford, and is on the management committee of Guildford Co-operative Society.

Lee, who has served as Parliamentary private secretary to Sir Stafford Cripps, was M.P. for the former Hulme division of Manchester, and was selected for Newton to succeed Sir Robert Young, who retired at the dissolution. Born in 1908, and receiving an elementary education, Mr. Lee led the 23,000 employees of a Manchester engineering company as chairman of the works committee.

Maj. R. J. E. Conant was M.P. for the former Bewdley division from 1937 to 1945, and for Chesterfield 1931-35, and has been Parliamentary private secretary to several Ministers. He was born in 1899, educated at Eton and Sandhurst. He has many associations with Rutland, having been High Sheriff in 1921, and is a deputy lieutenant for the county. He held a commission in the Grenadier Guards and served with them in both wars.
