    Mr. R. W. T. Hill, 33 years of age, is a carpet manufacturer in Kidderminster and has been active in the work of the Independent Traders’ Alliance and the National Union of Manufacturers. He served in the Royal Armoured Corps during the war and was in control of a province in Sicily during the operations there, being presented with the ” freedom of the province by the inhabitants on leaving.

    Sir Thomas Dugdale, who was first returned for the division in 1929, has served as Parliamentary private secretary to several Ministers, including the late Lord Baldwin. A past chairman of the Conservative Party, he is chairman of the Conservative Party Agricultural Committee. Born in 1897, and educated at Eton and Sandhurst, he entered the Army in 1916, serving with The Scots Greys. He was in the Yorkshire Hussars in the late war.

At 13 he was a mine worker, and then for 17 years was a trade union official for the Hickleton Main blanch of the Yorkshire Mine-workers’ Association. Elected to Dearne Urban Council in 1925, he was chairman three times before retiring in 1945. He was also a member of the former Don Valley Board of Guardians and of Swinton and District Isolation Hospital committee.

He was president of the Liberal Party of Wales, and served the National League of Young Liberals similarly in 1946-48.
