    BIOGRAPHY :

    Sir Ronald Cross, British High Commissioner in Australia from 1941 to 1945, is a former Conservative Minister. He was born in 1896 and was educated at Eton. He served in the first war and in 1931 entered the House of Commons as member for Rossendale, but lost the seat in 1945. He has held numerous Parliamentary posts, including those of Government Whip, Vice-Chairman of the Household, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade. From 1939to 1940 he was Minister of Economic Warfare, and from 1940 to 1941 Minister of Shipping. In the latter year he went to Australia.

    Mr. M. Follick, an advocate of spelling reform, is a linguist, speaking seven languages and having a working knowledge of 14. He founded a school of languages in London. Born in 1887, he was educated at the Sorbonne, Paris, and the Universities of Halle and Padua, and for four years was professor of English at Madrid University. He has been secretary to the Aga Khan, Sir Robert Philip (Prime Minister of Queensland), and the Sultan of Morocco, and is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and Royal Society of Arts.

A member of Hucknall Co-operative Society for 29 years, and now a director, he joined the Communist Party in 1934 and was its organizer in 1941-42.

She founded a child guidance clinic in North-West London. In 1946 she was elected to the London County Council, and among other appointments is chairman of its Children Committee.

    Mr. R. M. Speir, a solicitor and merchant banker with a London firm, was born in 1910, and was educated at Eton and Pembroke College, Cambridge. Chairman of the University Conservative Association in 1931, he was chairman of the Chelsea Junior Imperial League the following year and acted as an honorary secretary to Sir Samuel Hoare when Secretary of State for India. Since 1946 he has been an officer of the City of London Conservative Association. He served in the Army during the war and became a lieutenant-colonel.
