    BIOGRAPHY :

    Mr. David Kirkwood was member for the old Dumbarton Burghs division since 1922, and in spite of his 78 years is still an active worker for Clydeside, with which he has been long associated. Educated at Parkhead Public School, he was trained as an engineer and for many years was recognized as the engineers’ leader in Scotland. He was on Glasgow Town Council for four years before entering Parliament. He was a strong advocate of the Government financial support for building the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth. In 1948 he was made a Privy Councillor.

    Miss M. Herbison was born in 1907 and educated at Glasgow University and is a teacher. A daughter of a miner, she has been associated with the Labour movement all her life. She won North Lanark from the Conservatives in 1945. She is the only woman member of the Miners’ Welfare Commission, and she went to Strasbourg last August as the only woman delegate of the British Government to the Council of Europe. She is a member of the national executive of the Labour Party.

    Maj. D. McLaren was born at Balquhid-der 39 years ago and was educated at Edinburgh University. Although a qualified chartered accountant, he never practised. As a major in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, he was attached to the British Intelligence Service in the war. He also served with General Eisenhower’s Intelligence Staff, and was three years at Shaef, where he was head of the economic counter-espionage intelligence. His wife is an official of the American Intelligence Service.

During the war Miss Anderson held the rank of chief commander of the A.T.S., and was the first woman member of the Glasgow Territorial Association.

    Mr. Douglas Jay, who was appointed Economic Secretary to the Treasury in December, 1947, was born in 1907, and educated at Winchester and New College, Oxford. A Fellow of All Souls, he is a journalist and specialist in economics. He entered the Ministry of Supply in 1940 to help the munitions drive, and three years later went to the Board of Trade as personal assistant to Mr. Dalton to help in the planning of post-war industrial reconstruction. He was elected for Battersea North in 1946.

He was appointed to the planning staff of the Allied Land Forces in South-East Asia in July, 1945.

    Mr. D. N. Pritt, K.C., who represented the division from 1935 until the dissolution, was born in 1887 and educated at Winchester, London University and abroad. He took silk in 1927. Formerly a member of the national executive, he was expelled from the Labour Party in 1940 because of his opposition to official policy on Russia and Finland. In the last Parliament he became chairman of the ” Independent ” group of five Labour Members. He is also chairman of the Society for Cultural Relations with the U.S.S.R., and president of the Student Labour Federation.

A solicitor, Mr. Page has taken a special interest in road safety, being chairman of the Pedestrians’ Association.
