BIOGRAPHY :

Brig. A. H. Head was born in 1906 and educated at Eton and Sandhurst. Entering the Army as a career, he first joined the 15/] 9th Hussars and later transferred to The Life Guards. He served throughout the last war, being Assistant Secretary to the Committee of Imperial Defence, then on the staff of the Chief of Combined Operations, and later representative with the Director of Plans for Amphibious Operations. He entered Parliament in 1945 and is chairman of the Conservative Party’s subcommittee on the Army.

Women’s Advisory Committee.

Lt.-Col. C. L. H. D. Bate, a former Regular Army officer, aged 51, was born at Ladysmith and is now a director of a merchants’ import and export business. After two years’ service oversea in the 1914-18 war he was with the Danzig Plebiscite Force in 1920, the West African Frontier Force, 1920-25, the Army of the Rhine, 1927-28, and in India, 1928-32. Recalled on the outbreak of war, he served in North Africa and Italy.

His special interest is international affairs.

Educated at Eton and Cambridge, he is a barrister. During the war he saw considerable service as an intelligence officer with the R.A.F. in the Middle East.

Mr. Wilfred Paling, M.P. for the Wentworth division since 1933, had the largest maj-ority, 35,410, in the 1945 General Election. He had previously represented Don-caster. He was Labour deputy Chief Whip from 1935 to 1941, and successively Minister of Pensions and Postmaster-General. Born in 1883, he worked as a boy with his father at the coal face, married at 20, later studied mining at University College, Nottingham, and became a checkweighman.

Col. M. Stoddart-Scott is a doctor of medicine, and holds the degrees of M.D., Ch.B., and M.B. of Leeds University. In 1945 he entered Parliament as the member for Pudsey and Otley. He was president of the Students’ Representative Council, vice – president of Leeds University Union, and twice president of Leeds University Medical Society. He served in the Army in the war, and was Assistant Director of Medical Services. Before the war he was on the medical staff of Leeds General Infirmary.
