Nick Thomas-Symonds – 2021 Comments on Police Pay Review Progress

The comments made by Nick Thomas-Symonds, the Shadow Home Secretary, on 14 September 2021.

This announcement is yet further evidence that our police have no confidence in this Government or the Home Secretary.

The Government – shamefully – has pushed through a real terms pay cut which is insulting to our brave police who have gone above and beyond during the pandemic. The system needs to be fair and transparent.

Now that the Police Superintendents Association has joined the Police Federation in withdrawing from the pay-review body, the Home Secretary must – urgently – address how it can be reformed so police have confidence in a system that works for them.

Marcus Fysh – 2021 Comments on Chris Whitty

The comments made by Marcus Fysh, the Conservative MP for Yeovil, on 14 September 2021.

Sorry to have to say it but the Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty does not deserve the confidence of the country in deciding to vaccinate teenagers without good clinical reason. He should resign.

  • Emily Thornberry – 2021 Comments on International Trade

Emily Thornberry – 2021 Comments on International Trade

The comments made by Emily Thornberry, the Shadow Secretary of State for International Trade, on 14 September 2021.

Liz Truss may have tried to bury this survey in the dead of night, but she must not hide from the legitimate concerns being raised by the British people.

First, there is still strong public support for trade deals, but the survey shows she risks putting that in jeopardy if she continues ignoring rising fears about the impact of her proposed deals on our farming communities, food standards and public services.

And second, she needs to consider whether it is right for her to rush ahead with her plans to take our country into the Trans-Pacific Partnership when – according to her own survey – almost three-quarters of the British people still know nothing about it.

  • Natasha Harpley – 2021 Comments on the Behaviour of Emma Hodds

Natasha Harpley – 2021 Comments on the Behaviour of Emma Hodds

The comments made by Natasha Harpley, the Labour Councillor for Sprowston Central, on 14 September 2021.

It is upsetting that women always seem to be the subject of this kind of joke and locker room talk.

This was also a senior officer making jokes at the expense of officers her junior, so does not set a good example at all.

  • Dan Roper – 2021 Comments on the Behaviour of Emma Hodds

Dan Roper – 2021 Comments on the Behaviour of Emma Hodds

The comments made by Dan Roper, the Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Broadland District Council, on 14 September 2021.

It is a shame that an event to celebrate some of the fantastic work and dedication of our staff through the pandemic was overshadowed by this. It would not have looked out of place as a scene in The Office. The language used was wholly inappropriate.

  • Robert Jenrick – 2021 Comments on Councils Helping Afghan Refugees

Robert Jenrick – 2021 Comments on Councils Helping Afghan Refugees

The comments made by Robert Jenrick, the Secretary of State for Communities, Housing and Local Government, on 13 September 2021.

I am incredibly impressed by the positive response we’ve received from councils so far, with a large number already pledging their support.

However, we urgently need more offers of accommodation to welcome Afghan families who have remained firm allies of the UK, working with our troops and our country so bravely in recent years.

With this extra funding in place, I’m asking all councils who have not yet come forward to contact us with a firm offer of support to help these families secure the best possible start to their new lives.

Ben Wallace – 2021 Comments on Launch of National Shipbuilding Offices

The comments made by Ben Wallace, the Secretary of State for Defence, on 13 September 2021.

The creation of the National Shipbuilding Office and the appointment of Rear Admiral Rex Cox marks a further demonstration of this Government’s ambition to supercharge the UK’s shipbuilding industry across all four corners of the UK.

The newly formed Office will be the strategic centre that drives transformative change across the shipbuilding industry and wider maritime sector and supply chains.

  • Sajid Javid – 2021 Comments on Vaccine Being Offered to 12-15 Year Olds

Sajid Javid – 2021 Comments on Vaccine Being Offered to 12-15 Year Olds

The comments made by Sajid Javid, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, on 13 September 2021.

I have accepted the recommendation from the Chief Medical Officers to expand vaccination to those aged 12 to 15 – protecting young people from catching COVID-19, reducing transmission in schools and keeping pupils in the classroom.

I am very grateful for the expert advice I have received from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation and UK Chief Medical Officers.

Our outstanding NHS stands ready to move forward with rolling out the vaccine to this group with the same sense of urgency we’ve had at every point in our vaccination programme.

  • Jonathan Reynolds – 2021 Comments on Cuts to Universal Credit

Jonathan Reynolds – 2021 Comments on Cuts to Universal Credit

The comments made by Jonathan Reynolds, the Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, on 13 September 2021.

The Secretary of State’s comments this morning were an insult to hard working families facing this cut. One in 14 British workers will lose out, including 660,000 key workers.

Her own government’s analysis revealed this cut would be ‘catastrophic’ leading to more poverty, more debt and an increased risk of homelessness.

Labour will force a vote this week to give every MP the chance to back struggling families and cancel this cut.

  • Toby Perkins – 2021 Comments on Government Failing to Meet Apprentice Target

Toby Perkins – 2021 Comments on Government Failing to Meet Apprentice Target

The comments made by Toby Perkins, the Shadow Minister for Further Education and Skills, on 13 September 2021.

Young people and employers have been failed by the Conservatives’ irresponsible handling of the Covid crisis and a decade of neglect which has shut young people out of the training opportunities they need.

Skills and retraining should be a vital part of our economic recovery, but the Conservatives have shown themselves incapable of reversing the decline in apprenticeships which has seen over 188,000 opportunities lost under their leadership with 2020 seeing the lowest number of 16 and 17-year-olds starting an apprenticeship since the 1980s.

Labour has set out an ambitious plan to create 100,000 new apprenticeship opportunities for young people harnessing their skills and capabilities to fuel our economic recovery post-pandemic.
