How a parliamentary by-election works
A seat becomes vacant
A vacancy may follow an MP’s resignation, death, disqualification or removal after a successful recall petition.
The writ is moved
A motion in the House of Commons begins the formal process for electing a replacement Member of Parliament.
Candidates are nominated
The returning officer publishes the election timetable and confirms the candidates after nominations close.
Voters elect a new MP
The candidate receiving the largest number of votes is elected, regardless of whether they receive more than half of all votes cast.

Individual parliamentary by-elections are administered by the relevant local returning officer. UK Parliament records the reason for each vacancy, the date of the election and the newly elected Member of Parliament.
