  • Joan Walley – 2014 Parliamentary Question to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

Joan Walley – 2014 Parliamentary Question to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

The below Parliamentary question was asked by Joan Walley on 2014-03-27.

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, if he will establish shale gas extraction exclusion zones in sensitive areas for wildlife and water resources.

    Dan Rogerson

Each application for shale gas exploration and extraction will be assessed on its merits and operators will require planning permission from the local minerals planning authority. The Environment Agency will object to shale gas extraction infrastructure or activity within a Source Protection Zone (SPZ) 1 (i.e. drinking water protected zone). Outside SPZ1, the Agency will also object when the activity would have an unacceptable effect on groundwater based on a site specific assessment.

In England, an environmental impact assessment is required if a particular development is located wholly or partly in a ‘sensitive area’.

Planning authorities assess each application on a case by case basis. There is a general presumption against approving a permit in such areas.

  • Ian Austin – 2014 Parliamentary Question to the Home Office

Ian Austin – 2014 Parliamentary Question to the Home Office

The below Parliamentary question was asked by Ian Austin on 2014-06-11.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what estimate she has made of the number and proportion of cases that police have marked as requiring No Further Action in each of the last four years.

    Norman Baker

The information requested is not held centrally by the Home Office. Until recently, information has only been collected on crime outcomes that involve action being taken by the police. These were part of the former detections framework before 2013/14, and the new outcomes framework after that.

In April 2014, a new, broader crime outcomes framework was introduced, providing much greater transparency on how crimes are resolved by the police. This framework includes all scenarios where no further action was taken by the police. From April 2014 onwards, data is being collected on this new framework, and the first full set of statistics will be published in July 2015.

We will consider equalities impacts further as part of the consultation on the approach to the Secure College Rules during the passage of the Criminal Justice and Court Bill through Parliament, and throughout the development of the Project.

  • Stephen Barclay – 2014 Parliamentary Question to the Department for Transport

Stephen Barclay – 2014 Parliamentary Question to the Department for Transport

The below Parliamentary question was asked by Stephen Barclay on 2014-03-27.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what recent estimate his Department has made of the cost per mile of building cycle lanes; and what steps he is taking to reduce this cost in rural areas.

    Mr Robert Goodwill

The Department does not estimate the cost per mile of building cycle lanes. Cycling infrastructure varies in design and cost due to the location and scheme design. The provision of cycling facilities is a matter for local authorities and as such they are best placed to determine the spend per mile for building cycle lanes. The Department does provide best practice information in cycle infrastructure design through its publication Cycle Infrastructure Design (Local Transport Note 2/08). The Department encourages local authorities, both in urban and rural areas, to obtain best value in the provision of highways infrastructure.

  • Adam Afriyie – 2014 Parliamentary Question to the Cabinet Office

Adam Afriyie – 2014 Parliamentary Question to the Cabinet Office

The below Parliamentary question was asked by Adam Afriyie on 2014-06-11.

To ask the Minister for the Cabinet Office, what plans he for the future of the UK Census; and if he will make a statement.

    Mr Francis Maude

The Government recognises the value of the census but I have long said that it is outdated in its current form and could be more effectively and more cheaply delivered. Decisions about its future will be announced in the usual way, but the Government agrees with the conclusion of the Public Affairs Select Committee that the census needs to change.
