He played football for the English Universities XI and the Corinthians.

During his membership of the House of Commons he founded, a.id was chairman for 20 years of the Conservative Parliamentary Imperial Affairs Committee ; member of the Select Committee on Estimates for the past 20 years ; a member of many other committees and of Parliamentary delegations to foreign countries.

He was also a member of the former Don Valley Board of Guardians and of Swinton and District Isolation Hospital committee.
