    BIOGRAPHY :

    Mr. D. Heathcoat Amory became M.P. for the division in 1945 in succession to Sir G. Acland Troyte. Born in 1899 and educated at Eton and Oxford, he is a silk manufacturer and banker. A member of Devon County Council since 1932, he has also served on many other local government bodies, and is a governor of Blundell’s School and a former joint master of the Tiverton Foxhounds. For 20 years he was a Territorial officer, and from 1940 to 1945 was on the General Staff, and was in action at Salerno. In the Arnhem airborne operations he was severely wounded and taken prisoner.

    Mr. S. Wingfield Digby, aged 39, has represented West Dorset for the last eight and a half years, and was appointed a Conservative Whip in 1948. A barrister, he served in the Army throughout the war and rose to the rank of major. He was one of the originators of the Design for Freedom movement and its treasurer, and was a member of the Tory Reform Committee from its formation until he became a Whip.

Born in 1898, he was educated at Winchester and Cambridge, where he gained a triple blue in cricket, football, and hockey. He won the M.C. in the first world war.

He is a former president of the Cambridge Union, and was secretary of the cricket club.

He had intended to follow his father as a lawyer, but the war interrupted his studies and he entered Parliament in 1945 as member for this division.
