BIOGRAPHY :

Mr. Arthur Lewis, born in 1917, began work as a fitter with the City of London Corporation at the age of 16 ; he became a full-time trade union organizer, and later signed the first trade union agreement in the catering industry and in six months enrolled 20,000 new trade unionists in the West End of London. He was first elected to Parliament as member for Upton in 1945.
