Miss Irene Ward, M.P. for Wallsend 1931-45, entered politics at 24 and twice defeated Miss Margaret Bondfield at Wallsend. In Parliament she gave great attention to the industrial needs of Tyneside, and also promoted a private Bill enabling local authorities to pay pocket money to old people in institutions.
