BIOGRAPHY :

Sir Basil Neven-Spence was born in 1888, and in 1911 graduated from Edinburgh University M.B., Ch.B. Joining the R.A.M.C. in the same year, he was seconded to the Egyptian Army and the Sudan Government. He served throughout the 1914-18 war, mostly in the Middle East, and in 1924 he returned to England as a specialist physician to Aldershot Command. Three years later he retired from the Army, and in 1935 entered Parliament for Orkney and Shetland, and retained the seat in 1945. He was knighted in 1945, and is a vice-Lieutenant of Shetland.
